Jessica Hische & Helena Price
The portfolio and random thoughts of a crazy cat lady.
The Pussy Project
‘Helena Price, a dear friend and talented photographer, contacted me about a project she was swiftly putting together before the election. Like her Techies project, which gave voice to under-represented people in tech, she wanted to help give a face and voice to people who are all too often talked about in the abstract when it comes to politics—women. A variety of American women came forward to share their deep concerns about a Donald Trump presidency. Immigrants, veterans, refugees, abuse survivors—every voice is powerful and shows just how important it is that Trump and his disciples not be allowed to drag our country down with racist, misogynist, Islamophobic and extreme nationalist views and policies. Go read it, it’s fantastic.’
‘For the logotype, I wanted to create something that felt strong but still feminine. I wanted to pay homage to women who helped put in place many of the rights that we take for granted now, constitutional rights that are under constant threat by extreme conservative views. I searched for typefaces with the right personality, and fell in love with Photo Lettering’s Cooper Nouveau, which was re-enlivened by House Industries (originally designed by Dave West). It had the right DNA but needed a lot of updates to feel right for the project, so I redrew the mark, modernizing the letterforms and adding crispness to the connections.’
Helena Price
Helena Price is the founder of Dagmar Studios.
Raised in a small town in North Carolina, Helena has been making photos since she was six years old, getting her start shooting with disposable cameras from Wal-Mart.
Helena spent the first few years of her career working in branding, marketing and communications in Silicon Valley before leaving to start her own photography practice in 2013. Her clientele includes Facebook, Fitbit, Google, Instagram, Microsoft, Nike, Pinterest, Slack, Square, Twitter and Uber, and her work has been featured on ABC, CNN, The New York Times, Fast Company, Fortune, Glamour, The Guardian, Inc. and more. After two years of representation by one of the top photo agencies in the country, she decided to go independent and bring all of her creative and production in house, which she eventually named Dagmar Studios.
She no longer shoots with disposable cameras from Wal-Mart.

Viscom Mini Brief - xChange Festival 2019
In March 2019, Birmingham City University will be holding a month-long festival to mark International Women’s Day. The festival xCHANGE, features a wide range of topics including feminism, gender equality and issues impacting women in higher education, politics and wider society.
Relax, the festival is not just for females! xCHANGE is looking to hold an exhibition of VisCom students work in the form of a Postcard (148 x 105 mm).
Choose any /all of the briefs below for your postcard design(s). This is an opportunity to get your work exhibited, a great portfolio addition!
STRAND 1 –THE S IN ‘HE’
Incorporating the colour red, create a Postcard design representing the experiences of and issues for women in Higher Education. Female students are in the majority in our universities, but why do women working in the sector face unequal career chances, a gender pay gap and under-representation in senior academic roles – despite equalities legislation? Is the education system balanced? Salary? Treatment?
STRAND 2 –SEEN AND UNSEEN
Incorporating the colour orange, create a Postcard design influenced by an important feminist figure, activist ,speaker, academic or creative. You could be influenced by their art, speeches or actions. Who are the visible trailblazers and campaigners? Who remains invisible and why?
STRAND 3 –POLITICS IS PERSONAL
Incorporating the colour blue, create a Postcard design showing ways in which politics is personal and the personal is political. How does gender impact political life? Why is gender political? How is Brexit affecting women?

Try this tutorial to learn how to create an eye-catching t-shirt graphic in Adobe Illustrator CC using basic shapes and Adobe Creative Cloud mobile apps.
As I'm not strong on my capabilities within Illustrator I decided to do a design sprint from their tutorials page of their website. This has taught me some keyboard shortcuts for the software too. This will help my professional development as I'm becoming more familiar in the software.
Here is my replicated design from the step by step tutorial mocked up on the provided template.
The tutorial also recommends to customise the design so I've experiemented with that too.

Kate Gibb | Illustrator and Printmaker
Kate Gibb has worked as a Printmaker and Illustrator for over fifteen years from her print studio in Paddington. Her early studies in Printed Textiles fuelled her inherent love of colour and pattern, which continually provide the basis for the majority of her work. The kind of printing she is inspired by relies on chance, hiccups and happy accidents. Technically her practice is self taught, experimental and continually evolving. Commercially she is renowned for her music-related sleeve artwork, most notably for a long-standing relationship with The Chemical Brothers, providing artwork for their single and album covers.
