For The Love Of Food - Oregon Blackberry Pie with Almond Crust

Summer time in Oregon means sun-ripened blackberries! What better way to celebrate the summer than to bake a pie!

The process of picking the berries, shooting and editing this video was pure bliss for me. Yes, I love to make and eat food, but I LOVE shooting food. I love shooting food like a little kid loves Christmas. Capturing footage single handedly in the kitchen without getting berry juice or almond flour all over the camera (or myself) was a challenge (and I'm not sure if I succeeded), but the payoff of editing is so rewarding. I have a beautiful video to share, PLUS I have pie in my mouth for a week :)

For the Love of Food - Whistler, BC

At least a few times a year, I find myself driving the Sea to Sky Highway to a special place called Whistler. For years, it has been a haven for skiers and snowboarders seeking a certain lifestyle. A gem tucked away in the majestic mountains of BC, it is a tourist-driven town with a plethora of fine dining choices, 5-star resorts and boutique shops selling “Canadian” souvenirs.

The selection of restaurants in Whistler no doubt reflects the diverse population of its inhabitants and tourists. There is certainly no shortage of the types of food one can find here, but it’s also evident that pubs and fine-dining take the precedence in Whistler. However, being fairly health conscious, I settled on eating fresh, raw seafood at Sushi Village. Simple is definitely more my style.

The popularity of sushi here in the west is something of interest on its own. While like any other “ethnic” food, there are indeed some businessmen who snag popular ideas from culinary fads, and market them to unknowing mainstream customers. However, the intricacy in its preparation, and the unique taste experience of sushi should be noted. Seemingly foreign and exotic, with finely fileted strips of fish delicately laid upon pillows of vinegared rice, vividly colored raw seafood all brilliantly contrasting on another on the plate, the art of presenting sushi is just as important as its taste.

It is said that raw seafood is an aphrodisiac. Many sushi lovers can attest to the pleasures of indulging in an oral sensory explosion of raw fish, popping masago, and tingling wasabi. Something about cool maguro on a warm tongue certainly awakens the senses. Some establishments have even gone as far as serving sushi on the naked bodies of young ladies to pique the arousal experience. The common sushi accompaniments of ginger and wasabi are both “warming” foods that raise the body’s temperature and flush the skin with blood as sexual arousal would.

The process of preparing sushi, as well as the pleasure of eating it is a reflection our very simple human desires. In fact, on a very basic level, the eating itself is to satiate our hunger , but the satisfaction of doing so in such a rousing way no doubt lends to sushi’s popularity.

My travels to Italy was a great opportunity to begin this vlog series. What better place to start than a country so rich with local flavours and traditions. I tour the country and reflect on how their unique culinary traditions reflect love and relationships within Italian culture.

Food. The word conjures a million images. Fresh, crisp root vegetables stacked on top one another in an array of colours … Plump, deep red strawberries drizzled in glaze then propped over pastry … Puffy dark chocolate soufflé with warm centres … Dark coils of preserved meat that reveal layers of salty meat and fat when cut into … A dizzying display of breads sitting row by row, all each with their unique crust and essence of herbs …

Food is what nourishes us … feeds our bodies to survive, but also feeds our pleasure senses, our connection with nature, and with other eaters. To share food brings us closer together. A community will adopt the same general foods to consume, certain dishes or drinks will take on a unique meaning of its own, and preparation techniques are passed down generation by generation. To share food is to share a common understanding that we can see eye to eye.

This is the beginning of a series that will explore the relationship between food and people. We will explore beautifully unique and tantalizing fare from all over the world. We will discover its history, who is it that eats the dish, its preparation techniques, and how it is eaten. From hand to mouth is the very culmination of a series of significant actions and meanings that are shared within a community. So what does this all mean? How does eating represent that specific culture? And how does this dish reflect a unique aspect of that community & relationships within those common eaters?

Now armed with questions, let’s embark on a journey to seek some answers. It will be a voyage that spans beyond geography but maps our very palates.

Food is a tangible part of our social fabric. We are what we eat. So while learning about food, let’s also learn more about ourselves.

Spiritual Warrior. What does it mean to be a spiritual warrior? My body is a manifestation of my mental strength. My heart has known grief that my soul will always continue to mend by being better today than I was yesterday. It means that I push myself to go further, lift heavier than I did before because I know that I can. Pain no longer stops me. Fear is pushed aside by resilience and determination. My tears are raindrops that fall from the sky and feed the soil of my existence. My sweat bleeds from my body like volcanic lava oozing from the fire inside my heart. The pounding of my heart echoes inside my chest until it turns into the stampede of horses ... and for a moment, I am weightless. My breath fills my lungs and moves me like winds move tides.

I don't stop because I am tired, or because I am sore. This pain is temporary, but the determination to move forward will always be with me in everything that I do. Shift that pain into your reason to be stronger than you were yesterday.

This body is sacred. This body is the gift from lineages before me that had no choice but to use their bodies to survive. This body, this blood that courses through my veins has climbed a thousand mountains, felt the exhilaration of accomplishment, and knows the importance of self care. I train not because I have to, but because I honour where I came from, and what I am capable of. With each lift, press, pull, leap ... in each moment of sweaty determination, my spirit bows and honours my lineage and the universal forces that allows me to grow and be strong.

Magic in movement. I've been doing more "working in", than "working out" in the last four weeks. Celebrating ease has been my focus in Costa Rica, but now it's time to get back into the game. I've always loved the challenge of new movements and routines that push my boundaries and force me to really focus in the moment. I finally invested in the Pipehitter program by Ashley Horner, one of my favorite fitness athletes. I recognized that I needed some guidance in finding a new routine ... and this program astounded me with that newfound excitement that I was craving. It incorporates the hard and fast movements of crossfit, with traditional bodybuilding templates. But it also includes exercises that I never would have used before. Five rounds of box jump burpees? Handstand push-ups? I skimmed to week 7 ... a one mile run as a finisher? These routines terrified and exhilarated me at the same time. We always have a choice. To remain in the mundane, or to push ourselves to a place of discovery. I may not be able to do a handstand push-up now, but I will in eight weeks. The determination in my heart will move my body and transmit into all aspects of my life. There is a pure moment when fear is pushed aside by determination and strategy. There is magic in movement, because not only does it sculpts a strong body, and just feels damn good. This magic exists because it reveals the strength and character of my soul. Our bodies are physical manifestations of our minds, and I my mind will carry my body to places beyond my wildest imagination. Find the thing that makes you tick, and turn it into the reason why you move, and you WILL become stronger. #spiritualwarrior #pipehitter #girlmuscles

Do what you love. The expat town of Nosara is a quaint labyrinth of surf shops, organic eateries and tanned locals donning ski goggles riding ATV's. There's a warm friendliness that I adore. Although I'm not a surfer (wildly apparent since I clutch a Canon 7D with a zoom lens instead of a surf board), everyone looks into my eyes when they smile. It's been a ritual to rise early and walk the morning shoreline of every ocean-side town that I visit. It's a magical time of day when the sun is still rising into the sky, the air is cooler and only a few early risers speckle the beach. Sometimes I have to stop and thank the universe for granting me this slice of heaven every morning. With my camera, I capture the waves planting kisses to the shores, dogs playing in the waves, and the few who are already out paddling or surfing. I don't join them, but I revel in the feeling of freedom and play of just watching. My heart smiles. I love capturing moments on camera. I love syncing it with a soundtrack that moves me. I love sharing emotions that can only be conveyed through blending images and sound. I love remembering what that moment felt like when I go back and watch the footage. It's not the tools or the sport that brings connection. It's living your passion. Walk. Shoot. Write. Inspire. Repeat. #spiritualwarrior #fireSS #canon7D

Certain movements generate specific emotions. When we push, pull, lift, press with all that we are capable of in that moment, it requires focus and "digging deep". The movements that you find challenging can no doubt ignite frustration. Maybe this is my last set. No, my last rep. I will never do rows again. That's when I put the weights down and reset. Shake it out, breathe deep, and ask for strength to go further when the ego is taunting me to quit. It may not be very stylish in the gym, but sometimes I close my eyes and picture what I WANT. Strong, sinewy muscles that don't stop at discomfort. I feel the beast enter me and pushes my body to keep going. I tap into my undying energetic spirit that has already completed the last rep. Eyes open and focused. Hands grip the iron, I push through because quitting early is NOT an option. Suddenly, overhead presses GIVE me strength. I'm empowered like Atlas lifting the earth over his shoulders. A warrior is made great when he knows his challenges but finds the spirit to surpass then anyway. #spiritualwarrior

Being in Costa Rica’s nature lifts my spirit and grounds me. It’s as if tropical raindrops are kisses all over my skin, and sunshine were a hug from the Divine. Daily life feels sacred. Let’s take this precious energy harnessed only in nature and take our workouts outside. Instead of working the very “yan” characters of a typical gym session, take a moment to breathe in nature’s prana into every cell of your being, appreciate the strength it gives you, and set a positive intention. Be present. Allow the animals and plants of your environment to play through your body. A Pacific Sea Turtle’s fearless nosedives become a part of your divebomber push ups. Allow your heart to take flight like a Scarlet Macaw over tropical canopies. Your sweat beads like morning dewdrops kissed by butterflies. Your squats, pushes and lifts have the boundless energy of tides that rip sandy shores. Feel your edge. Teeter and surf on it. Where the outside meets the inside is the sweet spot. Visualize the sacred life force that surrounds you also within yourself, and feel appreciation that you are a physical manifestation of the Divine. #spiritualwarrior
