It’s not easy for Nadir to make connections, but there’s something peaceful about being with Daphne. There’s a long way to go of course - it’s not like they’re as close as Nadir might be with others in the family, and they’ll never be as close as he and his twin, but he knows he feels at ease with her and that’s so hard for him to find. He’s choosing to take that as a good sign. “You do?” He asks, a smile spreading across his face. He has a few tattoos already, little bits and pieces here and there, but this feels.. different. Like taking another step, starting to move forward in a way he hadn’t managed yet. “Uh..” He pauses for a moment, his smile fading a little. It’s not as though what happened to him was a secret, of course the family knew. That doesn’t mean he wants to talk about it, but he walked into this conversation. He chose this. “One for.. what happened to me when I was young. One for when I got my powers. One for - discovering who I am, figuring out I wasn’t broken - you know, when I figured out I’m ace. And one for graduating.”
daphne was always an outsider in her own family. the only child with a different parent, and the one with the most useless power, something that, in case of battle ( which was always a possibility when magneto was your grandfather ), made her more of a weakness than an asset. she always felt a little out of place, a feeling which was only exacerbated when she severed herself from her family. it was her own damn fault, and she knew it. but she was grateful for this opportunity, this second chance to connect with her siblings. she knew she didn’t deserve it, but she would make the best of it. before he opens his mouth, she can sense what he’s about to say, and she regrets even asking him. there’s no need to dwell on it. she lets that dark cloud pass, and instead focuses on something brighter. ❝ i think it’s a great idea, ❞ she tells him, fingers absentmindedly tracing the designs on her own skin. ❝ you know, ❞ she starts, using her words like a shy handshake, trying to create a bond. ❝ most of my tattoos are in honor or different people, or places that are important to me. ❞ she shows him the inside of her wrist, a small lightbulb drawn on her skin. ❝ that’s you. ❞

Nadir didn’t quite expect to connect to Daphne the way he had, but there was something comfortable about being around her. He tries not to let his emotions run amok when he’s with her - he doesn’t want to overwhelm her powers. She has a calming effect on him to a degree though, so he’s not too worried about that. He’s glad to see her smile despite his somewhat awkward approach, and he flips his book open at her question. “I did a bit of a sketch, it’s.. not great, I’m not the artist in the family, but I did my best.” He settles on a page and offers it to her to show the seven chakras. “I’m a little behind, but I was thinking I could get one each time something.. new happens. Something to change my life. This would be the Fourth, so I’d get the first four at once and then.. the other three as more things come in the future, I guess.”
it was so easy for daphne to get overwhelmed whenever she was around her family. that was, after all, why she had decided to leave them ( or, to put it more accurately, why she decided not to come home that christmas, and the summer after that, and the one after that, and so on ). that turned out to be a grave mistake, but at least she found her way back home. when she was with nadir, however, she wasn’t worried about that. there was no risk of exploding feelings and nauseating emotions. there was only peace. ❝ i love that idea, ❞ she said, the most genuine and wondrous of smiles on her face. for years she’d been decorating her own body as a diary, a collection of scribbles for every person and every place that mattered to her. mountains on the back of her neck. fireworks on her wrist. flowers blooming on her shoulder. ❝ which, uh. which four events are you getting those for ? ❞ she asks, her voice dropping in volume as she approaches the subject. she’s missed out on so much, talking about the past made her uneasy.

her smile is blinding to him, the softness it carries making him feel warm inside. “okay,” he whispers, emboldened now. his fingers properly lacing between hers. “okay,” he repeats, a smile blooming on his face. light and airy feelings overtake him and he feels shy at her gaze. there’s something so soft here. he feels understood as he answers, trying to be optimistic as ever, “but it—it shouldn’t be. not if you’re with the right people.”
being around him is intoxicating. she’s not used to being surrounded by such light, such...sweetness. it’s so good. she feels like she’s wrapped in a pink cloud. she bites her lip, the corners of her lips stretching as far as they’ll go. it’s so rare, but she feels at peace. she feels calm, and for once, isn’t anxious about always being so exposed, so vulnerable. ❝ i guess, yeah, ❞ she says with a shrug. ❝ sometimes it’s hard to find the right people, though. ❞

Nadir takes a seat in absolute silence beside Daphne, clearing his throat as though to announce himself, a book safely tucked under his arm. He’s.. getting used to Daphne and she’s definitely made that much easier for him than he’d anticipated, and with everything that’s happened over these past few months - well, Nadir is slowly adjusting to the fact that there are more people he cares about than he’d anticipated. “I was thinking of another tattoo.” He begins softly, a slight tremble in his voice. “For.. for me, you know? Since I graduated.”
it was like they were learning how to be a family again. or, better yet, learning for the first time. they’d been so fragmented for so long, but now all the missing parts were gravitating towards each other again, finding their place in each others’ empty spaces. they had to learn how to relate to each other again, and it wasn’t easy. it wasn’t like riding a bicycle. so just feeling nadir’s presence, feeling him approach her ignited a warm, bright light in her chest, and a smile bloom on her lips. ❝ that’s sounds like a great idea, ❞ she replies in a soft, almost sing-song voice. ❝ what are you thinking ? ❞

there’s a furrow of the brow for a second, confusion painting his features as she speaks. “leonard bernstein? who’s that, a writer?” his question is innocent and betting on the topic she talks most on—books and poems and authors and the wonder of words.
❝ no, but you’re close. ❞ she giggles, amused at his confusion, before standing up and walking to her record collection, her index finger caressing the worn-out edges of their slips. with the same dainty finger, she pulls out her West Side Story record, displaying it like a game show model. ❝ he was a composer and conductor, ❞ she finally explains as she carefully sets the disc on her record player.

marcos diaz loved being an x-man, the team had given him a home when no one else had wanted him, and gave him the ability to help other lost mutants, that did not however cover the strain of being separated from his family who so often needed him here. still that’s all forgotten the moment that daphne is his arms again and he spins her round like she’s still a child. “well i’m glad considering you should be stuck with me for a little while now,” the male grins as he pulls back slightly eyes scanning over her to make sure she’s alright. “you gonna have to fill me in on what i’ve missed,”
the pint-haired girl lets out a giggle, feeling like a child again in the presence of her dad, one of her two favorite people in the world. despite keeping her distance from her family ( for their own good, she told herself ), she could never stay away from her parents. she would never be completely separated from them, even if what kept her close to them was a phone call every couple of days. ❝ so you’re staying ? ❞ she asks, an excited glint in her eyes. they’re finally all back together. and while that worried her ( lots of people, lots of emotions, lots of ways to get into her head ), her joy at getting the opportunity to mend all the fractures in her family is greater. ❝ so much has happened, but i guess that was to be expected, ❞ she says with another laugh. ❝ have you seen the others ? ❞

the news that her dad was back in paragon made daphne so happy she could radiate light. few people understood her like he did. no one made her feel as safe as she did when she saw him and got to run into his arms like she was five years old again. ❝ papá ! ❞ she squealed before wrapping him in a hug. nothing could make her happier than both her parents in the same place as her. they were her anchors, kept her firmly rooted to the ground. she never should have stayed away from them. ❝ i missed you too, i’m so happy you’re here. ❞
