It's really important ta get the help you need for something like this talking to a professional will help.

It might be worth trying to find a healthier coping mechanism that works for you. A rubber band for example can help give the stimulation of it without harming you. Finding something that works for you would really help and talking to someone whether it's a therapist or some friends and family.

That rubber band maybe is something to avoid, or at the very least make sure it's a soft hairtie or something because it's too easy to get carried away and start snapping it too hard.

My favorite suggestion is draw. Draw on yourself or paint on yourself with red marker- or just draw whatever. It doesn't have to be pretty. Keep your hands busy. Keep bad objects away.

An ice pack on the wrist(with a cloth if need be. Or a cold washcloth) works as well too. Get that stimulation without harming yourself. Maybe take a shower. Keep yourself busy and stimulated.

And also- I know one of the big questions is "why is it so bad? As long as you're careful about it-" yadda yadda. Because one day you won't be. It becomes habit. And if you can manage to break it, then that is one hell of an achievement. I'm so proud of this anon for realizing that sh really, really isn't good.
