There came a point where you stopped wondering whether Leo liked you.

Not because you found an answer, but because you became too tired to ask.

He was impossible to understand.

One afternoon he'd be sitting beside you for hours, lazily resting his head against your shoulder while editing videos on his phone, occasionally shoving the screen in your face just to hear your opinion. The next he'd pass you in the hallway as though you'd barely met. Some nights he'd text you at two in the morning asking if you were awake because he "needed company."

You always answered.

Always.

Even if you had class in an hour. Even if you were exhausted. Even if he hadn't contacted you for three days straight.

Then you'd spend the entire night talking, laughing, listening to him complain about idiots online or show you another photograph he'd taken because "the lighting looked cool."

Those nights felt dangerous. Because during those nights you could almost pretend.

Almost pretend that when he looked at you a little too long, it meant something. Almost pretend that when he absentmindedly brushed your shoulder, it wasn't an accident. Almost pretend that you weren't the only one falling.

Then morning came.

And Leo became Leo again.

He'd slip back behind that practiced smirk, tossing sarcastic remarks over his shoulder as if the version of him from three in the morning had never existed. If you tried to mention one of those late-night conversations, he'd blink at you with that annoyingly unreadable expression before shrugging.

"You think too much, Honor Roll."

And maybe you did. Maybe you did imagine everything. Maybe the way he sought you out whenever he was lonely meant nothing at all.

Still...

You kept answering.

Weeks turned into months, and somehow you became part of Leo's routine without ever becoming part of his life.

He'd send you photos first, ask your opinion on captions, drag you to cafés because he "didn't want to eat alone,” sit beside you in silence for hours, but the moment someone joked that the two of you looked close—

He'd laugh.

"Nah."

Just one word.

Casual.

Thoughtless.

Enough to make your stomach sink.

And you'd smile anyway and pretend it didn't matter. Pretend your heart hadn't quietly cracked. Pretend you thought the same thing.

Then came the mission.

It wasn't particularly memorable. Just another anomaly. Another report. Another day where things went wrong—which seemed like most days, honestly.

You were injured protecting a group of students. Nothing life-threatening. Just bad enough that you spent nearly two weeks recovering in the infirmary before being sent home to finish healing.

Your phone stayed silent the whole time.

At first you weren't worried. The influencer wasn't exactly known for checking in. Then three days passed. Then five. Then ten.

You wondered if maybe he was busy. Maybe another mission. Maybe he hadn't noticed. Surely he'd noticed.

When you finally returned to campus, your arm still wrapped in bandages, Leo spotted you almost immediately.

"There you are, Honor Roll."

Your heart betrayed you. It always did.

"...Hi."

"You got the notes from yesterday? Sho wants them and I obviously don’t go to lectures."

You blinked.

"...Yesterday?"

"Yeah."

A pause.

"I wasn't here yesterday."

"So?"

"I haven't been here for almost two weeks."

Leo frowned.

"...Seriously?"

You laughed quietly.

A small sound, almost embarrassed.

"You... didn't notice?"

"When did you even leave?"

The world became strangely quiet. Not dramatically. There wasn’t any ringing in your ears, no cinematic realization, no sudden epiphany. Just…quiet.

Because suddenly every late-night conversation replayed itself inside your head. Every moment you'd convinced yourself meant something. Every photograph. Every smile. Every shoulder bump. Every "needed company." They had mattered.

Just...

Not enough. Not enough for him to notice you were gone.

You smiled anyway.

"...Never mind. It’s not important. Which class do you need notes for?"

Something inside you settled that day, not shattered, settled. Like dust after a building collapsed.

You stopped answering his messages immediately. Stopped waiting outside classes hoping you'd run into him. Stopped bringing him coffee because you'd memorized his order months ago.

When he called at two in the morning—

You were asleep. For the very first time.

When he texted the next afternoon asking where you'd been, you simply replied:

Busy.

Nothing more.

He sent a question mark.

You never answered.

Life became quieter, lonelier, but healthier. You started eating lunch with other people, started laughing more, started realizing how exhausting it had been to spend every day hoping for scraps of affection.

You still loved him, of course. That hadn't disappeared. Love wasn't that convenient, wasn’t that merciful. But now, every morning before class, you'd whisper the same sentence to yourself.

Not today, probably not tomorrow, not even the near future maybe, but one day.

Weeks later, Leo finally cornered you outside the library.

You looked up.

"Hm?"

"You've been weird."

"I'm sorry you feel that way."

His eyebrows furrowed.

"What happened?"

You almost laughed. Because he genuinely didn't know. He couldn't remember your absence. Couldn't remember your disappointment. Couldn't remember the day something inside you had quietly broken.

"...Nothing."

"Don't bullshit me."

"I'm not."

"You've been avoiding me."

"I've been busy."

"You were never too busy before."

There it was.

Not I missed you.

Not I was worried.

Just...

You were never too busy for me before.

You smiled softly.

"I'm trying something new."

Leo stared. And for just a moment, something uncertain crossed the ghoul’s face. Something almost frightened, almost panicked. Then his phone buzzed. He glanced down, rolled his eyes, clicked his tongue.

"Tch…whatever."

And just like that—

Leo became Leo again.

He walked away. And you watched him go. Your chest ached but you didn’t chase him. Instead you closed your eyes.

Some day, someone will like me the way I like you.

You wanted to believe it. You really did.

Then, two nights later, your phone lit up.

Just two words. Just enough.

You stared at the screen for a long time. Then sighed, picked up your phone, and texted him back.

And, of course, no matter how hard you try to deny it—

Taiga never forgot you. Well…he remembered your nicknames.

"Kitty."

"Kitten."

"Kitty-cat."

He'd shout it across campus, drag you into ridiculous adventures, shove half his food into your hands because he'd suddenly decided he didn't want it anymore.

Some days he'd spend every waking hour glued to your side, acting as though you were the most entertaining person at Darkwick. Those were the days you loved most. Those were the days hope grew. Then, without warning…he'd disappear, not physically, emotionally.

Another mission would catch his attention. Another anomaly. Another whim. Another person. You'd wave. He'd blink.

"...Oh."

Then continue walking. As though yesterday hadn't happened, as though he hadn't spent six straight hours complaining to you about absolutely nothing, as though you hadn't started believing maybe—

Just maybe—

You mattered a little more than everyone else.

The mission that injured you wasn't even particularly difficult, just unlucky. The anomaly struck before anyone expected it. You shielded an innocent bystander. The rest was a blur.

When you woke, you were informed you'd be recovering away from campus for nearly three weeks. Your first thought was embarrassingly simple,

Taiga's going to complain that I'm gone.

He didn't.

Three weeks later, you returned. Still limping slightly, your shoulder wrapped tightly beneath your uniform. Taiga spotted you immediately, it took a while to remember you but he got there eventually. That’s good.

Right?

"There you are, Kitty."

Your heart lifted.

Maybe...

Maybe he'd—

"You skipped casino night."

Which happened to be every night but you didn't comment.

"...I wasn't exactly able to."

"Huh?"

"I've been gone." Silence. "...For three weeks."

Taiga tilted his head.

"...Were you? Why?"

Another pause of silence.

Romeo, standing several feet away, rolled his eyes and lowered the papers in his hands.

"You BTH, how idiotic can you be?"

"What?"

"They were hospitalized, obviously."

"...Oh."

Taiga looked back at you.

"...Really?"

You gave him a small smile.

"It doesn't matter."

He accepted that answer immediately.

"Okay."

Then launched into a completely unrelated story about something he'd eaten during a mission.

You listened.

You always listened.

But this time...

Something felt different.

You realized he hadn't asked if you were okay. Hadn't asked if you were hurt. Hadn't asked if you'd been scared. He simply moved on.

So...

Eventually...

You did too.

When Taiga wanted company, sometimes you politely declined. When he dragged you toward another reckless idea, you occasionally said no. When he shouted "Kitty!" across campus...sometimes you kept walking.

He noticed, not immediately, but eventually.

"...Kitty."

You looked up.

"What?"

"Come here."

"I'm studying."

"So?"

A pause and the red-head sighed.

"After then?"

"...Maybe."

Maybe.

Taiga frowned, you'd never said maybe before.

Days later he found you eating lunch without him.

"...Kitty."

"Hm?"

"Come."

"I'm good here."

"Why?"

You looked at him, really looked at him. Then smiled.

"I'm spending time with friends."

"I'm your friend."

"I know."

"Then?"

Then.

Such a simple word but one you couldn't answer.

Because the truth was cruel.

You were tired of only existing when he remembered you, tired of waiting for the version of Taiga who would choose you that day.

"...Go eat, Taiga."

He stared another second before wandering off.

A week later, he appeared beside your desk and dropped your favorite snack in front of you.

"For you."

You blinked.

"...Thanks."

"You're not mad anymore?"

You almost laughed.

"I'm not mad."

"Then come with me."

There it was.

A snack. A nickname. A familiar grin.

Just enough warmth to make hope bloom again.

Your chest tightened.

One day...

You looked at him, at the ghoul you'd spent months chasing. Then quietly stood.

"...Okay."

And, of course...

You let him break your heart again. And again. And again.

Shion Genkai:

The first time Shion made you cry, he laughed. Not cruelly, per say. Just...with curiosity. As though your tears were another interesting reaction to study.

"You cry easily."

You wiped your face.

"...Sorry."

"Why’re you apologizing?"

You didn't know. It simply seemed easier than explaining.

After that, it became a pattern. Shion would push and you'd finally reach your limit. Then, the moment you were ready to walk away—

He'd change.

Like flipping a switch. Suddenly he'd become gentle, unexpectedly so. He'd brush imaginary dust from your sleeve. Call your name softly. Walk beside you in comfortable silence. Offer you half his dessert. For five minutes...he became someone else.

Someone kind. Someone careful. Someone who made you believe maybe the real Shion was hiding underneath everything else.

Then, once you smiled again—

He'd go right back to himself.

Again.

And again.

It became a cycle. One you recognized, one you hated, one you couldn't seem to escape no matter how hard you tried.

"I'm done."

You'd whispered it once after he'd spent an afternoon deliberately provoking you until you left in tears.

"I'm serious this time."

Shion only tilted his head.

"...Really?"

"Yes."

"...Okay."

You turned.

Made it three whole steps.

"...Inspector."

You stopped.

"...What."

"...Wait."

And against your better judgment...

You did.

He walked over quietly. For once, there was no grin, no mocking smile, no teasing. Only a strange softness.

"...Don't cry." His hand hesitated before patting your head. "I don't like it."

Your resolve cracked instantly. Because after wanting his kindness for so long… How could you walk away the moment he finally offered it?

So you stayed. Of course you stayed.

The next morning he laughed when you flinched. And the cycle began again.

Weeks later, you barely recognized yourself. You laughed less. Spoke less. Cried more.

One afternoon, standing alone with a cup of coffee growing cold in your hands, you stared at your reflection in the café window. You looked tired, both emotionally and physically. You whispered the words before you could stop yourself.

"One day..." Your reflection stared back at you. "One day..." Your throat tightened. "I'll stop falling in love with him."

The sentence hurt. Because you weren't sure you believed it.

Then someone sat across from you.

Shion.

"Found you."

You looked away.

"...Congratulations."

He frowned.

".You're so boring today."

"I'm tired."

"Then smile."

"I don't want to."

He watched you quietly. Something shifted in his expression.

"...Are you leaving me?"

The question almost made you laugh.

Leaving.

As though he'd ever really let you stay.

"...No."

"Liar."

He reached across the table and tapped your hand. A tiny gesture, it was barely anything.

"...Stay."

One word. Soft, gentle, just enough. You closed your eyes. You knew exactly what was happening. He'd sensed you pulling away, so he'd become kind again. Just long enough. Just enough to keep you from leaving. It shouldn't have worked. You knew it shouldn't.

You took a slow breath, opened your eyes, looked at the hand resting over yours, then looked at the magician.

And despite everything...

Despite knowing better...

Despite promising yourself this would be the last time...

You turned your hand over, lacing your fingers with his.

Shion smiled.

Small.

Victorious.

The warmth disappeared from his expression almost immediately afterward, replaced by that familiar mischievous grin.

You lowered your gaze to your untouched coffee.

Cold now.

Bitter.

You wondered, not for the first time, what it would feel like to love someone who reached for your hand because they wanted to hold it—

Not because they were afraid you'd finally stop.

Maybe one day.

Until then...

You let him break your heart again.
