You had just sat down when the knock at the door came. Ignoring the ache in your bones, you shuffled over and snuck a peek through the peephole.
That's all you saw, all you could see, really.
Cautiously, warily, you opened the door a crack and looked out...and then up.
"Good Evening, petal." The voice was old and new, strange yet strangely familiar. Like hearing a chorus of voices so seamless it was almost impossible to tell.
You blink, then introduce yourself quietly. You knew what this creature was. You had watched the broadcasts.
"I'm here to ensure you don't have any immediate needs-" was all she managed to get out before you flung the door wide open and burrowed into her, your arms spread out and not having a single chance of reaching her back. She returned your embrace immediately, vines lacing into a weave behind you, comforting and cushioning and sheltering you from the world.
"It's alright, little one." You nodded, wiping your nose with a sleeve.
It took a few minutes, but eventually you felt reasonably stable enough to offer her your help. Anything she needed, anything she wanted. You had been waiting, dreaming, yearning for this day, after all- and just like the stories you had read and written and posted, the characters who had been so brave-
You wanted to be brave, too. You wanted to show you were one of the good petals.
Vines twitched and flexed as they patted your head, untangling a little knot that had been forming without you realizing.
"Oh~ you want to help me, do you? Hmmm...well...how about this, sweetheart~ why don't you come with me while I finish this street, and then we can take a nice break and you can tell me a bit more about life on this planet, hmm? I think you could use a good bite to eat, anyhow. Do we think that's a good plan?"
You wanted to offer more...but the words that tumbled from your tongue were only affirmations. Of course it was a good plan. Of course you would be so very helpful in her vines. Of course you needed a bite.
The affini smiled, then offered you a tablet. It had clearly scanned your personal devices; all your old contacts were there.
As well as...as well as all the posts you had liked. The art you had seen. The words you had written.
All there before her. Her eyes stayed on your face, but her finger tapped the first story you had ever read, pulling it up.
"In the meantime...why don't you tell me exactly what you enjoyed about this, petal? I am ever so curious..."
