pumpkin's cage is too small and needs more bedding. hamsters need at least around 800 square inches to roam and explore, as well as at least 6 inches of it so they can exhibit their natural burrowing behaviors. paper and hemp bedding is most commonly used. please do proper hamster research before getting a hamster.
i kNOW dude i know π₯Ή i have no money of my own we live in india and literally this cage is all i can get with the money my parents allow and the resources generally available in india. this is genuinely the biggest cage i could find. ive been begging my parents to let me diy a cage for ages and they repeatedly say no. getting this hamster wasnt even my choice </3
(late additional note. i fully hamster proofed my bedroom and we let him free roam the room every night from 7pm till like 10am so he still gets some enrichment i bromise)

Slapping is fairly self explainitory behavior. A slap/box is when one hamster uses their front legs to smack a being or object of their displeasure.
A photo of a rehome i took in, who was slapping at bedding her sister (hiding in the orange) threw out. Her name was Tylenol but i called her Tyle for short.
In comparison with pinning, this is a step down on the disgruntled behavior ladder, so this is a milder correction overall.
Additionally to being a less severe correction, its also a behavior that exists regardless of the social hierarchy, meaning it doesn't invoke a power dynamic.
Including a list of various things that are reasonably responded to by slapping:::
- Attempting to hog a treat, especially if they weren't the first to find it
- waking up a sleeping cagemate to annoy them
-stepping on a tender spot on a cagemate while trying to get comfy (much like a cat stepping right on all of your organs while trying to lay on you)
- a dominant cagemate being just a little too dominant (most common when the dominant animal is the younger one)
- babies/juveniles annoying their parents or older cagemates
They may also do this behavior towards objects in their cage, such as:
- a hanging toy bumping into them
- a wheel refusing to turn because its stuck on bedding
- a box they're chewing into to get to treats that is taking too long in their opinion
- bedding flung around by another cagemate startling them
and in some cases you'll even see this behavior towards humans. the causes of this behavior towards humans are much more concerning than when shown towards their cagemates, causes can include:::
- prior mishandling (usually presents with biting, evasive, and lunging behaviors)
-discomfort due to environmental overwhelm (a large upgrade, space that doesn't meet the individuals needs, and sometimes very open siding can contribute/cause this)
- discomfort due to health (diabetes and other illness can cause aggressive tendencies, and missed injury can lead to short term and chronic pain that induce discomfort with handling and create a negative loop of bad interactions. like a cat avoiding the litter box due to UTI pain)
In some cases of human oriented slapping/boxing, such as those caused by health conditions or environmental stressors, you may reverse the behavior with medical attention and habitat change.
Diabetic hamsters with a balanced blood sugar are less likely to experience aggression due to discomfort, which additionally improves their QOL long term.
Environmental cage aggression is often reversed if intervention happens early, by creating a low stress environment by enclosing back/side walls, simplifying setup to prevent over stimulation, and using uniform enrichment that is changed out on intervels to not become anxiety inducing (ie, fill open space with a lot of a similar item, like multiple bendy bridges as space breakers, or several woven hay hides in different shapes). Once the hamster's slapping/cage aggression has reduced, you can slowly swap out repeat items (like replace 1 bendy bridge one week 3 to a cork log after simplifying, and not making a major change again until week 5 or 6). For a super low threshhold hamster, this may be as much as they can handle for environmental change.
