Renegades + Jackie & Steve’s Wedding Bands

“We can use these.” Jacqueline turned around with her palm open, presenting him two simple gold bands. “They’re my parent’s wedding rings.” 

Steve shook his head. He closed her hand, hoping that it was a spontaneous thought and not one she was actually considering. She placed her hand over his which prompted him to look up at her. She was actually serious. “No, Jacks, I can’t…I can’t wear your father’s wedding ring.” It didn’t belong to him. And he didn’t feel worthy of being in possession of such an item. He didn’t know John for as long as he had hoped to. By the time Steve had met him, the man’s memories had already faded too much. The name Steve Rogers no longer rang familiar to him. Every occasion that Steve would see John, the latter would often mistake him for one of Jacqueline’s old boyfriends or a high school friend. Never himself. But John wasn’t at fault for it. 

And she appreciated his hesitation. A small part of her did feel a bit odd for suggesting it. But her parent’s marriage, albeit it wasn’t perfect, she had never seen two people more in love. And what better way to honor them and their love, then to use these rings to solidify her own love. “They’re not here anymore,” she replied in a quiet tone. Her throat ached, the rings suddenly felt heavy in her hand. “I think they would rather we use these rings instead of letting them sit in a box.” She pulled her hand from his grasp and slipped her mother’s ring on her finger. She held her father’s ring between her thumb and index finger, then took hold of Steve’s hand. “Besides, I think my Dad would be very happy if you wore his ring.”

She watched him until he reached the end of the hallway. Then, forced herself to turn away and started heading for the conference room. Steve paused and spared a glance behind him, watching her disappear around the corner. Their interaction, however short, was worth having to say goodbye again. This time it was a proper goodbye, something Steve wished he could’ve had with her. But he finally got it. He finally got his closure with her.

He couldn’t remember her name, it was at the tip of his tongue, too out of reach for him. When he tried to remember her face, it always came to him blurry and out of focus. Almost as if he could scrub it clear. The only thing he could picture were the mess of blonde curls she sported every time he saw her. And she was nice. That he knew for sure… she was very nice. 

“Addie. Does that name sound familiar to you?” 

He felt his body jolt, the familiarity of the name sparked something inside him. “I-I think so.” 

“She’s my grandmother.”
