Take 5- Mihimihi
Take 5 represents are very special part of my mihimihi- my childhood.
I grew up on the South coast of Wellington, Island Bay. Island bay is surrounded by water, sand, rock pools and possesses a constant echo of the ocean’s waves.
I wanted to incorporate this special part of myself into my space. The lights in my sight reflect the energy that is powered through a wave and I thought that emitting light is a powerful way to represent movement and energy.
I used the two elements of Land (rocks) and Water (ocean, waves) to also represent the metaphor of two becoming into one. My father is of Pakeha descent and my mother is native Filipino, I wanted to subtly embody this aspect into my work as I proudly identify as a mixed-race individual. I wanted to use the elements of land and water and the metaphor or two becoming as one to represent my parents coming together as one.
