Setsubun is a traditional Japanese event that marks the day before the beginning of spring, usually celebrated on February 3rd.

The word Setsubun literally means “seasonal division.” On this day, people perform a ritual called mamemaki, where roasted soybeans are thrown while saying “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” which means “Demons out! Good fortune in!”

Why do people display a Daruma at New Year?

A Daruma is a lucky doll in Japan. People display it at New Year to make a wish or set a goal for the year.

The Daruma always stands back up when it falls. This means “Never give up.”

At the start of the year, people paint one eye and make a wish. When the wish comes true, they paint the other eye.

So, a Daruma is a symbol of hope, effort, and a fresh start.
