There are different kinds of drones which use different principles for flying. What I am building is a basic quadrocopter (meaning it has four arms) and generates lift by rotating the propellers with the help of motors which sit on each arm. Movement is achieved by controlling the individual frequency of rotation for each propeller or a combination of therein. A Flight Controller (the brain of the drone) is responsible for calculating and dispatching the signal on the amount of rotation needed for each motor to do a particular move. This signal is received by the ESC (electronic speed controller) which regulates the flow of the right amount of current to the motors so they can spin accordingly. A user typically sends the desired movement signals via a transmitter which is picked up by a receiver and is relayed to the Flight Controller which then takes care of the motion of the drone.

I wanted something small and agile that can fly outdoors and has the possibility to add GPS features for experimental purposes. Since this is my first build, I just wanted to learn the basics of drone building and also to learn flying. But once I am through that stage, I wanted the possibility to tinker my drone to do more fun stuff. So I settled for a 270mm FPV (First Person View) Drone which seems to cover most of my wishes.
