Arguably, one of the most influential pop artists of our time whose fusion of Latin genres in music have broken down barriers right through mainstream media, all while challenging traditional notions of masculinity within a culture oftentimes plagued with machismo. Gracias @dilys for the opportunity to art direct and photograph this project, our first cover— bringing all the elements of painterly romanticism and Caribbean spirituality that makes our work. Our new series for @christopherjohnrogers, we were asked to interpret the garments from collection 010 from our point of view—bringing influences from our floral photographs and inspired by the colors in impressionist and expressionist painters—like Monet, Van Gogh and Odilon Redon. Ibejí is currently up at the @thebassmoa! In a group exhibition titled Open Storage, which reflects on the thematic and chronological breadth of the Bass’ collection. The exhibit presents contemporary works in conversation with historical works from the museum’s founding collection— dating as far back as the 14th century; connecting the Renaissance, Baroque and Modern periods. Open Storage draws connections between themes pervasive throughout art history, including portraiture and the construction of identity within subjugated communities. The show includes both emerging and established contemporary artists like Zanele Muholi, Genieve Figgis, Alex Israel and Elliot & Erick Jiménez, along with classical works by painters like Hyacinthe Rigaud, Francesco Botticini and Jean-Baptiste van Loo. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our piece Ibejí, is a representation of the twin deity as a shadow figure within Lucumí mythology. The weight and choice of motherhood seems even more powerful these days. The concept of it may have been absent from our lives growing up, but we were always lucky enough to have been surrounded by incredible maternal figures. This one now feels even more special because it's coming from someone who has helped shape our lives. We are so happy for @bo_champagne, who very soon will be entering motherhood.
