yes, they can. of course they can. there are so many female friendships in media, which are greatly appreciated by so many people. same for male friendships. two people of course can just be friends.

i do understand to a certain extent why this becomes a talking point when people ship two characters romantically who aren’t a canon couple/are friends. however, i rarely ever see this question when it’s regarding male/female friendships. don’t get me wrong, i’m sure there’s people who do feel this way about it, this is just based on what i’ve seen.

if you see a queer ship headcanon, and your first thought is “can’t two people just be friends anymore?” ask yourself, ‘would i feel this way if these characters weren’t the same gender?’

if the only reason you express annoyance towards shipping culture is because of people ‘making it gay’ or ‘not letting people just be friends’, then it’s disguised homophobia.

if the only reason you immediately dislike a ship is because the characters are the same gender, then it’s disguised homophobia.

as i said, i understand it to a certain extent - sometimes characters just don’t go well together (this is based on my opinion. you’re free to ship who you want). however, if you’re actively ignoring the chemistry two characters share purely because they’re the same gender, then act as if people are “delusional” for seeing things that are so blatantly obvious, and the majority of the fanbase see it, then you need to sit with the discomfort that you’re feeling and work out why this bothers you so much.

because yes, two people of course can just be friends, but you don’t get to invalidate queer coding and queer yearning because of your own discomfort. gay people DO exist, and invalidating genuine queer representation because you don’t want to see it, is so wrong.

love is so special, and it should stay special regardless of who the characters are.

queer people don’t make things gay if the characters are written that way. you can ignore it and spew hatred towards our communities, try to discourage us and then kick us when we’re down, but we’re not gonna let you try and take away the very little representation/relatability we have.

if a character/tv show/movie gets ruined for you purely based on queer ships/characters (canon or not), then that’s a you problem. it’s fine to want two characters to stay friends, but if that’s only a rule for queer characters - you don’t care about friendships, you just don’t like queer characters/relationships.

don’t get me wrong, if you have a genuine reason for not shipping two characters, then that’s not what i’m talking about. what i’m talking about is the people who actively dislike a ship purely because it’s queer. even if there’s undeniable chemistry, they won’t even give it a chance because it’s queer.

I can’t say for sure this happened, as only the creators and the people involved in making the show were in the room when the show is being written, or on set when it’s being filmed. This is just based on what vibe I got from the interviews from the showrunners, and season 2 in general.

Season 1 ended with Wednesday and Enid on good terms. They’d seemingly stayed close after the hug, with Wednesday accepting Enid as a friend.

Season 2 starts out with them still being on good terms, with both bringing gifts for the other from their adventures over the summer. Very sweet moment.

It starts to go downhill when Wednesday gets her vision of Enid’s death, which makes total sense for her character as to why she’d distance herself, knowing that she believes Enid’s death would be her own fault, so she steps back to prevent it, that makes perfect sense.

It’s part 2 of the season that really starts to confuse me.

Having them argue when she gets back from the hospital, then having them STILL argue until pretty much the end of episode 6. I know they each have their own stuff going on, but it feels like they regressed some of their character development so they didn’t have to further develop the relationship between the two.

I understand some arguments and tension is needed for the story, and i’d agree that some of their arguments were warranted. But I can’t help but feel that the writers are too scared to not have them argue, because they don’t want to progress their relationship.

I’m not even talking in the romantic sense (as we know they’re not planning on making wenclair canon), but just in general. They didn’t even feel like friends until the start of episode 7.

And when we finally see them making progress and Wednesday opening herself up again, something happens to repress the relationship again.

Why are they scared to have them actually be friends?? I don’t understand why they keep creating arguments between them. We get that they’re complete opposites, but that was literally one of the biggest reasons why they work so well, so why is it that the writers barely have them in the same room now?

Considering they’re the 2 most popular characters in the show, their scenes together are criminally low. It almost seems like they’re scared to have too many scenes of just the two of them?? (don’t come for me, i’m just stating the vibe i got).

The reason why this sticks out to me is because I noticed that in the last 2 episodes, the majority of their scenes together are ones that are big moments in their relationship. Why are we only seeing big moments? they’re supposed to be best friends, yet the show has reduced it to either at each others throats or being completely vulnerable with each other.

I know there’s a lot of characters in the show and they want to even it out, but I’ve not noticed this with any other pair of characters. Where’s the moments of them just existing as best friends?

Did they ever stop to consider that maybe the reason why so many people ship them together is because the only “nice” moments they have together are being extremely heartfelt and vulnerable? And when it’s not “nice” it’s sacrificing themselves for the other?

They’re never given chance to be best friends, and that’s why people are so adamant on them being more.

I’m rambling, and this probably doesn’t even make sense. I just struggle to understand some of the choices made by the people making the show.

besides the fact that girls can literally be queer without being a lesbian. there are other sexualities that include liking multiple genders.

while i understand why they’d use that reasoning, they’re purposefully ignoring the context behind the statement.

they kill FOR each other, they don’t go after and kill each other. they don’t threaten the people they care about, and don’t manipulate them.

they enact violence, but NEVER in cold blood. morticia killed people FOR gomez, in his honour. never once has she threatened him and tried to enact any sort of violence on him. (i’m basing this mainly on the Netflix adaptation).

let’s just forget about ships for a second and talk about the blatant mischaracterisation of wednesday. i know she’s outwardly monotone and appears to be emotionless, but she does have feelings. you see it in her actions. there’s a difference between being cold hearted and masking your feelings to stay in control of a situation. she pushes her feelings down because of what happened in her childhood.

the complete disregard for everything wednesday is and what’s important to her is insane.

i’ve heard people say that the addams family would welcome him with open arms.

the person who’s hurt their daughter, their son. the person who for the majority of season 2 was hunting their daughter and her best friend down with the sole purpose of killing them both. the person who was involved in isaac being able to get ahold of thing.

the addams family like monsters sure, but do you honestly think they’d feel okay with that?

i want to make it clear that i hold sympathy for tyler as a character, and what happened to him is genuinely awful. i know he was groomed and taken advantage of by someone who was meant to be a trusted adult.

what i also know is that he shows no remorse for any of the people he’s hurt. he likes the power, likes how free it makes him feel.

he got offended when isaac implied his power was a curse, and was actively fighting against the restraints of the machine while they were trying to remove said power. the only reason he didn’t kill wednesday AND enid, is because he was under the control of a master.

and even if you want to ignore all of that, there’s still the fact that if they did decide to have her end up with him - it would be a massive ‘fuck you’ to enid. one of, if not, the most important person to wednesday.

this isn’t me saying you can’t ship them, it’s completely up to you who you ship. these are just my reasons why i think it doesn’t make sense. if you find this post offensive in any way, feel free to scroll.

I’m not against wenclair staying platonic, because at the end of the day i just love their dynamic.

however, if my best friend looked at me for 14 seconds, i’d burst out laughing and think she was gonna prank me or something 😭 (this is referring to a tiktok i saw of a wenclair fan who counted how long W&E looked at each other after enid wolfed out to save wednesday in season 2) i understand emotions were high and the situation was very tense, but even in a situation like that, we’d be too stressed to stare at each other for 14 whole seconds.

i’m not against wednesday being aroace either. as someone who’s demiromantic & demisexual, the representation would be amazing.

wednesday & enid’s relationship kinda strikes me as queerplatonic rn. the way they are with each other is vastly different than how they are with anyone else in their life.

i’d say the real “sisterly” bond in that show is enid & agnes. which i adore.
