One of the reasons I love apothecary diaries so much is how well the characterisation is done. So often in fictional media do I see characters drastically change over time. Whether it is between seasons, movies, books or even different media types.

I just finished a reread of the series and that's something soo visible in the last one. maomao talks a lot about how other characters have matured (yao) but she too has matured. she has been proactive with jinshi in the past two books, going so far as to grab his hand in this one, and also provide him with reassurance when jinshi is feeling jealous or insecure. before, she would simply avoid touching him, or be angry someone told him something that he gets jealous over. and its not just about her love life she is being proactive! jinshi has made strides to be less overworked and is happier for it. maomao has now decided that she will no longer be a passive observer because that oftentimes may lead to more trouble in the long run. she's gonna be proactive!!
