time: mid afternoon

Selling some baking goods at the farmer’s market, that Minnie had made, Sean was in the middle of making another sell to an old lady when he noticed someone else come near. “I’ll-I’ll be with you in a second.” He says with a small smile before gathering some change and saying goodbye before turning to the other. “Hey, see anything interesting?” 

I know exactly how awkward can be [sighs] I’m going to tell you a little secret of mine, no one besides my brothers know this, not even Kayin and I don’t want him to ever find out. [takes a sip of her wine tho gain courage] I’ve already told you about Alexander, well he has an older brother, who liked me. When Alexander was alive I thought that he was flirting with me, but he always had girlfriends, so I never thought about us being together. But when Alex died he told me that loves me, he even claims that one day I will marry him. But I don’t like him, at least not in that way, he is family and nothing more to me. When he came forward with his feelings it was awkward, the kind of cutting with scissors the tension. Things between us are better now, last time we spoke, I told him I was dating someone, and he was happy for me, because I am happy [sighs] My point is that if he really wants you, even as a friend you will find a way to stay in each other lives. Have you ever heard about the red thread of destiny? Maybe you and Riv have that. [gasps] Please, don’t ghost Matt that’s a horrible thing to do, he deserves better, and also you. You deserve better than keep wondering “what if?” and I think that you know that, and I’m sure Riv knows that as well.

Oh, God. [Cleo made a face and sipped her wine] That sounds intense. See, I don’t know how you do it– I wouldn’t be able to be friends with that guy anymore. Did he chill with the calls when you told him you were with Kayin? [she asked.] I don’t know, I guess I just find the idea complicated. Like, again, if I told him I liked him and he didn’t like me back, I probably would pull away too, for my own sake. I don’t think I’d be able to see him again. [bites her lip, still picking stuff off her pizza] And he’s not wondering what if, trust me. I love that you think he is, but he’s not. That’s my job right now. [chuckles] What’s the, uh, red thread of destiny, though?

Friday next week, I just want to get it done as quickly as possible, but next week is finals week and it was the day I could get it done and apparently that day you had a space open so it was perfect.

[laughs] I know that, but I also know that you won’t sue me, you love me too much. [Ella payed attention to Cleo’s explanation and let her to let it all out] You are probably going to hate me about what I’m going to ask you, but have you talked with River? [leans back on her chair] You were the one who told me that talking things helped. [Ella takes a slice of pizza before continuing talking] I think, that he likes you back, and that he’s avoiding because he doesn’t know how to express his feelings for you. Trust me on this one, after all Kayin kind of did the same thing to me, and I grew up with two brothers who were emotionally constipated. What I still don’t get is why you are “kind of dating Matt” if you don’t like him the same way he likes you

[Cleo furrowed her brows, crossing her arms over her chest as Ella used her own words against her. Frustrated because she knew Ella was right, she shook her head and rolled her eyes slightly] It’s not that easy. Not for us. River and I have always been friends- just friends. I love what we have, and I- if I tell him how I feel and he doesn’t feel the same way, it’s going to change things, whether I like it or not. I might even lose him forever. I’d like to think I wouldn’t, but… have you ever tried to be friends with someone who has feelings for you when the feeling’s not mutual? It’s- it’s awkward. It’s uncomfortable. [sighs] But no, that’s not it. You don’t know Riv– he’s so forward when he’s into someone. And I’m not going to lie, there have been moments where I’ve thought that maybe he does have feelings for me too, but… our entire friendship we’ve been so flirty with each other - to the point where people are surprised to find out we’re not together! - it’s hard to tell if it’s real or not. Like maybe this is just normal for us, but I’m grasping at straws because I desperately want to believe we could be something. [shrugs] And I don’t know why I’m still with Matt. I’ve been trying to break things off since it started, but it never feels like the right time. I can’t do it over text, I can’t do it over the phone, I- I thought about leaving him a message and then blocking his number so I don’t have to actually talk to him, but.. he’s my brother’s best friend. And I have to be careful how I do it, because I don’t want to mess things up for them. Or us! I’m still going to have to see him, you know?

You always say that about you work and yes I’m ready to go. [open the car door and left her bag on the backseat] The reason I was asking about work is because I rescheduled my appointment

Aha [she looked at Cleo skeptically, not fully believing her] Then if you are excited,-which don’t you think I buy for a second- why were you being dramatic, angsty and weird, just yesterday? [she grabbed her glass of wine and took a sip] What’s wrong? Or What is bothering you? [she interrupted Cleo when she opened her mouth] And don’t tell me that is nothing, you brought pizza and wine, we both do this when something is bugging us

[Cleo blinked at Ella as she talked - as she called her out - and then she shook her head, leaning back on the chair while taking a much needed sip of her glass of wine] You know what, it should be illegal to know me this well. I could probably sue you– you know my dad’s a lawyer, right? Mh-hm. [she shook her head, flipping open one of the pizza boxes and grabbing a slice] I’m o-kay. [she sighed] I just- things have been weird between me and Riv these last few months. We haven’t been hanging out as much, and, like, a new season of The Bachelorette started last month, and we haven’t been doing our Bachelor nights at all. Katie’s season is halfway through and I don’t know who Greg is yet, all I know is that we all love him. [she frowned, holding her glass of wine close to her chest] And we used to be all over each other – in a friendly, flirty way – it’s complicated, but right now it’s… awkward. We can barely look at each other in the eyes, and I know that I’m very much to blame, but… I can’t stop thinking that maybe he knows how I feel and he’s trying to avoid me as much as he can. A-and then there’s the guilt! God, the guilt is eating me alive! All because… [she let out a sharp exhale and started absentmindedly picking off the olives in her pizza] Matt exists, and I’m sort of dating him, but not really, but enough to make me feel like I’m cheating on him. Like, he gets all excited and happy when we can talk, and I’m over here agonizing over the fact that I haven’t cuddled with River McGrath since Matt James ignored a hug from Rachael Kirkconnell on national television.

Oh that explains it [she said from the kitchen, she walked in to the dinner room with two glasses of wine and a bottle opener] They are cute, although I would’ve stayed with black if that’s what you really wanted or another color [she said looking at them] Where are you going to?

No, I really like the pink. I was just being dramatic and angsty and weird. [she giggled as she popped open the bottle of wine, pouring it in their glasses] We’re going to Canada. Lake Louise in Alberta– we’re staying in a cabin for a week. [smiles] I’m excited. The place looks nice.
