Notes: hope you enjoy this chapter! I tried different perspectives and it might not come across as good as I wanted it to, so lmk if that part is any good. Iâll probably be posting some more random stuff in the very near future in relation to this series/universe soon. Also I made a name for this series but it sucks so if you have any better ideas please put them in the comments
summary: a simple speech goes incredibly wrong!
chapters: (pt 1), pt 2 youâre here!
It was the day of the festival and (Y/N) had spent late into the night rehearsing the script and had finally got it memorized.Â
She was sitting in the backstage lounge of the auditorium 15 minutes before the festival speech was scheduled to start. She was taking deep breaths to calm her racing heart. âItâs going to be fine, stop worryingâ she said to herself, because it was true, she was going to do good, and she knew that. It just didnât really feel like it.
There was a knock at the door of the lounge.Â
(Y/N) stood up and opened it. She was surprised to find Mumbo (who was definitely supposed to be at the door to the auditorium keeping watch for suspicious people and/or behavior) but she was happy to see him nonetheless.Â
She leaned against the doorframe, an eyebrow raised âMumbo, what are you doing here?â
âIâm just checking on you before your big speech, I know you were freaking out about it yesterday.â He says with genuine concern shining through despite his attempt to keep his usual composed facade
Her expression softens slightly at his concern âMumbo trust me, Iâll be just fine. I stayed up late last night and memorized the whole thingâ
After a few minutes of this back and forth it was about time for the speech
Mumbo spoke one more time before heading to his post standing at the back of the stage. âGood luck today, your highnessâ and with those final words he was gone.
(Y/N) took one last drink of water and scanned over the script one final time before heading to the stage
Once onstage (Y/N) was passed the mic by the announcer who had very briefly introduced her as â(Y/N) leafwright! Heir to the throneâ
She took a deep breath and took center stage before speaking âhello Leafwright kingdom! Welcome one and all to the 50th annual Leafwright fall festival!â  She then went on, listing the activities that were scheduled to conspire during the festival.

Mumbo was standing at the back of the stage, his eyes scanning the crowd when he noticed something⌠or rather someone from in the balcony. It was a man in a hood and he was drawing a bow.Â
And it was directed right at her highness.
And she clearly hadnât noticed yet.Â
â(Y/N)!â Mumbo shoutedÂ

(Y/N)Â Â whirled around at Mumboâs panicked shout. Only to see Mumbo rushing towards her and the he tackled her to the ground.Â
She let out a âoof!â As she hit the wooden floor of the stage.
Less than a second later an arrow came wizzing over their heads and went right past where her head had been mere seconds earlier.
The crowd erupted in panic. Rushing out of the auditorium hurriedly and screaming in fear. The queen and queen rushing to the stage to see if their daughter was alright.

As soon as (Y/N) was safe Mumbo got off of her and ran to find the man.Â
He shouted on his way out of the auditorium âguards! Seize him!â To his fellow guards Scar and Grian ran after the man alongside Mumbo.Â
They could see the man in sight, not far ahead

The parents pushed their way through the dense crowd and made it to the stage, panting. âHoney, are you ok? What happened?â Her mom questionedÂ
(Y/N) stood up, brushing herself off. âIâm fine, just a bit shaken.â
Her mom relaxed slightly at her words. Her dad spoke up âwe should still get you to a doctor, just in case.â (Y/N) rolled her eyes, her dad was always a bit overly cautious âI told you Iâm fine.â
Her dad sighed âweâre getting you checked outâ
Before dragging her off to the doctor.
The festival was canceled for obvious reasons. So that night (Y/N) found herself sitting in front of the fireplace that night sipping a cup of tea. She heard footsteps approaching down the hallway.

Mumbo walked down the hallway, his feet heavy with exhaustion from the earlier pursuit. Â
He stepped into the living room to find (Y/N) alre there. He sat down in a chair as well. After a quiet moment he spoke, his voice soft âhow are you holding up after today?âÂ
âIâm holding up just fine. The better question is how are you holding up?â Mumbo was slightly surprised at the question, he looked over to find a hint of worry in (Y/N)âs eyes. He took a moment before responding âIâm doing alright, your highness. although I am quite exhausted from chasing that man earlier. We caught him. I believe he is to be put on trial soon.â He responded honestly.
He saw (Y/N)âs shoulders relax a fraction âthatâs goodâ they said, clearly relieved.
There was a peaceful silence for a while, the days events having taken a toll on the both of them
(Y/N) spoke after a while âyou called me by my name todayâ she said, a small smirk on her faceÂ
Mumbo froze. It was true, during the earlier panic he had shouted her name âI apologize your highness, it slipped out, I really didnât mean toâŚâ (Y/N) chuckled, placing a hand on top of his reassuringly âMumbo, itâs quite alright. Iâve been telling you you could for agesâ Mumbo paused his rambling
That night as Mumbo lay awake in his bed, unable to sleep because he kept thinking about those few fleeting seconds when he had pinned (Y/N) to the ground.
the physical contact, even as brief as it was was something he hadnât felt in years and was something he secretly and desperately longed for some day again.
Of course, given his position it was most likely inappropriate to have such thoughts about a member of the royal family. And so he felt incredibly guilty and he forced himself to think about other things. He fell into sleep after 5 minutes of focusing intently on the cracks in the ceiling
