That time again | Eliza & Nathaniel
"Well, what can I say, I aim to please", he said before sculling the contents of his glass. Slamming it down on the bar, he groaned. "Oh, y’know, just busting my ass for Daddy Copeland’s every need and whim. And we both know he’s got eyes like a fucking hawk. So, I haven’t exactly been able to… fraternize lately. Not with our boss breathing down my damn neck.”
Scoffing at Eliza’s comment about his dedication to Helix, Nathaniel motioned the bartender for two more drinks; if he was going to get absolutely trashed, so was Eliza. “Look, we both know that I’m probably a little more dedicated to my job when I should be. But I joined this corporation in order to achieve something, whatever the hell it may be. I sure as fuck didn’t take this job to play nepotism to my boss’ golden children.” The two drinks arrived, and he quickly swallowed some of its contents before continuing to talk. “I mean, Madison I can understand. The girl’s easily our best recruit, and between you and me I’m fairly sure she’s a bit of a murderous psychopath. But Dylan - I mean, he’s good, but if his parents really think he should be next in line to be CEO they’re kidding themselves.”
Nathaniel was vaguely aware that he shouldn’t be telling Eliza any of this; as well respected as she was within the corporation, she wasn’t quite allowed to know the various secrets of Helix yet. Hell, even Nathaniel was kept out of the loop on occasion. But with almost four glasses of whiskey in him, any discretion was long gone.
“Sorry, Nathaniel, I have just no clue what fraternizing you’re talking about.” Eliza said this while furrowing her eyebrows with a smirk, as they both knew exactly what he was talking about. While sometimes the thought of getting caught by the corporation with Nathaniel kept her up at night, most of the time Eliza just shrugged off the thought of them getting in trouble, assuring herself that she could just erase the minds of whoever saw the incriminating evidence – even if she wasn’t entirely sure she’d be able to.
“I don’t know, I thought you always aspired to be a babysitter for some sadistic adolescents.” Eliza listened, not showing on her face the strong interest she had in the inner workings of the company. Even working as an Extractor with as high of a skill level as her – being humble, of course – she still wasn’t allowed to gain access to any information regarding recruitments or removals. It was a bitch, and she assumed it was because of her younger siblings.
Hypocritical as it may be since she enjoyed using her ability as Helix so much, the last thing she wanted to see was Claire or Spencer become involved in the corporation. Over the past 4 years there she had seen the danger agents were put into on the field, and she had a feeling the higher ups at the organization were aware of her unwillingness that they be recruited.
Keeping up with Nathaniel’s drinks would be a difficult task for anyone, but Eliza had a fair amount of practice at this, and almost immediately signaled for another glass. “C’mon, fill me in on this new class of recruits,” she said with a smile as she passed him over his glass. “Are any of them better than me in training? You can be honest; I swear I won’t start weeping at the bar. I’ll save it for when we get home.” She hoped she wasn’t being too obvious in asking Nathaniel for all this information, especially since she had no real need for any of it – it just made her uncomfortable when she didn’t know everything she wanted to, and she was hoping to alleviate it.
You have exquisite ideas for how to fill the endless boredom. Eliza, when victims have no memory of whatever can be arbitrarily defined as grievous bodily harm, it means we don’t have to deal with pesky and frankly unnecessary consequences.
I could only list a select few who could make a more dynamic pair than you and I.
Now that I'm thinking of it, I'm sure I could sacrifice the satisfaction of having people remember what you did to them if it meant keeping Daddy Copeland off of our backs. Though I'm sure next week he'll find a new grievance to rag about.
Maybe if I'm feeling creative I'll pull out all the stops and fill someone's memory of us torturing them with their mother touring them. Madness ensues.

That time again | Eliza & Nathaniel
"Another", Nathaniel slurred, gesturing towards the empty glass in front of him. "Actually, make that two. I have a friend coming." He smirked to himself - Eliza was more than just a friend. Not unless friends often slept together on a regular basis, but that was about as far as their relationship went; Non-exclusive and no strings attached. At least, that’s what Nathaniel told himself when he chose to ignore the glaring looks he would catch Eliza giving Heather Maxwell, and when he found himself doing the same when Eliza was flirting with whoever her next conquest was.
His thoughts were interrupted by the arrival of Eliza herself, and he found himself grinning. “Eliza, it’s been far too long”, he exclaimed. Usually the pair met up far more frequently than this, but with his nepotistic boss breathing down his neck lately, Nathaniel couldn’t risk being seen with Eliza. Romantic relationships in Helix were forbidden, even ones as casual as theirs, and as much as it thrilled him at times, he wasn’t about to everything he had worked for just because he wanted to get laid. But now Dylan had his long-awaited first Removal, so Nathaniel was free to do whatever he wanted.
At that moment, the bartender handed him two glasses of whiskey. He passed one to Eliza, raising his own in the air. “To the end of a godawful week”, he toasted.”Though I must say, it’s a little better now”, he said, his lips curving upwards to his trademark smirk.
Eliza took in the bar, looking around. As per usual, there was some stranger making a fool of themselves in a brightly lit corner crying and singing karaoke to some Adele song, to which Eliza tried her hardest to block from her precious eardrums. She didn't recognize the bartender, though that didn't necessarily mean he was new – Eliza had a tendency not to notice people that didn't impact her in the slightest.
“You know saying that boosts my ego even more, Nathaniel,” but she accepted the compliment along with the glass of whiskey, echoing his small smile back. She lifted her glass to clink with his, chugging the contents down in one swift swallow. “Where the fuck have you been, by the way?” It had been strange not to see Nathaniel once inside of Helix this week, but not seeing him outside the corporation was entirely abnormal. A couple of years back they had started a very, very casual relationship, but Nathaniel had been a fixture in Eliza’s life since she was a Helix recruit. Going without even passing him for a week was strange.
“And why is this week so godawful, pray tell? I though you lived and breathed the brotherhood of the Helix.” Ordering a vodka tonic for herself, she turned to look at the man. He was one of the few people that she worked with that seemed wholeheartedly committed to his job, like he took some pleasure in raising teenagers into agents. Eliza guessed that was one of the reasons they ended up being so close in the first place – the predominant reason she worked in the company was simply because she enjoyed using her ability. God knows she didn't need to have a job if she didn't want one.
It makes you my informant. Now, has your intel already dried up, or can you provide information on the unenlightened? We could make a house call, have some fun, straighten the facts out, prove to them that I’m the ice queen, and you’re the manipulative bitch.
I don't think I'm physically able to come up with a better way to spend my afternoon than torturing whiny, soft-skinned, shits with Madison Copeland, but I'm afraid my power is rather useless to you, considering I can't really see you wanting your victims to forget what you did to them.
If you would like to lodge a formal complaint for supposed unnatural water damage, leave your name and address and I will personally resolve the issue.
I've had more than one person call me "the ice queen" recently, and I thought you might want to defend your title. Does that count as a complaint, or just me doing you a favor since you take a fair bit of pride with that name?
Aw come on, Liz. You know I wouldn’t heckle you about alcohol unless it was really too much. I’m a bartender for Christ’s sake. But Liz, respectable amount is so…relative.
Mmm, you have a pretty good point. Respectable in a bartenders view, I think, though I am just completely bullshitting this all right now. Maybe I should make a point to come to see you, though, considering I see none of you in the bumble of Valens.
Fucking cleaning lady.
Unfortunately, Spence’s shack of a place prevents him from doing the same with us. Such a shame that he took that whole ‘live beneath your means’ shit so seriously.
I’m convinced she owns stables in other countries in order to breed only the finest strand of housekeepers. I would propose we do the same, but apparently that shit is unethical and we may or may not get arrested if we attempted. Moral compasses are such a drag.
Well at least Valens has a modern day Muhammad or Siddhartha or something in Spencer. We should feel very proud.
Maybe if we do it in Switzerland???? We'd revolutionize the world, or at least the upper crust of it. Though I won't give up Ines. She's had my sheets folded tightly since 1992.

Fucking cleaning lady.
All you have to do is ask and I’d be happy to give. You are my sister, after all.
That’s actually a great idea! There’s nothing better than sprucing up your lifestyle via a non-English speaking woman flushing your shit and doing your dishes. How did you get to be so smart, ‘Liza?
The offer extends. Even though my house is literally your house, you get the magnanimity of this generosity.
Oprah magazine. She loves foreign housekeepers!
Fucking cleaning lady.
What Mom doesn’t know, won’t hurt her. Eliza, you know my daily inventory check of my liquor is just as intense as when I chug it down, there’s no plausible way I could have forgotten.
Unless, and dare I say, you took it? Which is fine, but some honestly would be kosher, Sis.
Yeah, if there's one thing I'm definitely doing it's stealing alcohol from my little sister.
Though I know you do find a passion in deporting housekeepers, maybe sling this one Spencer's way. He could use it in that non-Manning, destitute, shack he's living in these days.
Fucking cleaning lady.
The bitch had the nerve to go through my liquor stash and snatch a bottle of Pinnacle. I’ll do this world a favor and have her deported before she can breed a whole new generation of booze-stealing cleaning ladies.
Don't question mom's choice of help, or that bitch'll kill you. I find it much more likely that you finished the bottle on your own and you forgot? Happens to the best of us.
That time again | Eliza & Nathaniel
Although Helix was underground, it lacked the damp darkness that you’d think of when sewers come to mind. No, like the corporation itself, the headquarters of Helix was sleek and as close to perfection as an underground hideaway could be. Eliza waited for the elevator that would pick her up from one of the lower floors in the building, where they brought people – both Breed and Ordinaries – that seemed to know too much about the corporation. Being as she was one of the few, if not the only, mutant they had with memory manipulation, this walk had become rather familiar to her. She had just finished wiping the memory clean of some irrelevant pedestrian who happened to witness an unidentified Breed member shifting into a dog. As soon as Eliza had had the time to roll her eyes as the pure stupidity of the person that shifted in the clear daylight, she wiped the memory from the human’s mind. It was one of the simplest tasks Helix had assigned her for quite some time.
As she came to the disguised ground level floor, Eliza stepped out into the now-dark city. It amazed her how quickly things could change in the outside world when she was underground. She supposed this thought carried some deeper meaning about her future at Helix, but the blonde quickly shrugged it off. She stepped into the driver’s seat one of the corporations town cars and headed towards Awol. The cars were normally used for assignments, but Eliza didn’t feel like hailing a cab, only to have to have some mindless conversation with someone that couldn’t even advance their career past driving a taxi. Besides, it wasn’t as though this trip to the bar had nothing to do with Helix. Regardless of her enormous value to the corporation, Eliza was still kept out of the loop on some of the top-secret Helix assignments, and it was something she detested. She had a deep seeded thirst to know all there was about the organization she was so a part of, and what she wanted, she got. That was one thing Eliza was unyielding about.
As she parked the car a few spots down from the bar, she made a silent mental note to not get too drunk that she couldn’t return the damn thing, though she know this promise to herself was half-assed. Normally she’d be more careful about acting in control of herself in front of her superiors – superiors only in job rank, obviously – but she just a bit more relaxed in front of Nathaniel given their relationship. And if Eliza knew him as well as she thought she knew just about everyone, he’d already be 4 glasses of whiskey in. She walked in through the dark, familiar doors and quickly glanced around for Nathaniel, noticing with a small sigh that Heather Maxwell wasn’t bartending. Shame, she thoughtas she was always up to ruin someone’s night in order to enjoy hers. Spotting the man, she slid up to the seat next to him. “Hey, stranger.”
Right. So how much alcohol are you drinking daily now…?
C'mon Spencer, you know the reason I avoid Awol when you're working is that you'll never find that information out. But it's a pretty respectable amount.

Rest in peace, Shirley Temple. You were my most favorite non-alcoholic drink, so really my least-favorite drink.
