“oh gosh, the dark is just so nerve wracking, isn’t it?” rory raised an eyebrow at the mention of his title. “wow, doctor? like surgeon doctor? very impressive,” she said with a smile. “i’m rory young. or, well, eleanor. but rory is so much easier.” she looked around her at the surroundings. “do you know anyone else here?” 

  She hesitated for a moment, unsure. Then her nicotine craving overrode any worry about being polite or worrying about not knowing him. “Thanks,” She said quietly before putting the cigarette to her lips and taking a long drag. Alice closed her eyes and felt her body relax a bit. She tilted her head so she could blow the smoke into the air and not directly into his face. She took another drag before extending it back to him, “We can share it, if you want,” Alice offered, “I don’t want to take it completely, especially if it’s your last.”

         𝐀  𝐒𝐇𝐔𝐃𝐃𝐄𝐑  𝐑𝐀𝐍  𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇  𝐇𝐈𝐌  ,  the  thought  of  a  spider  making  him  want  to  launch  himself  fully  at  the  lights.  he  took  the  cigarette  from  eli  ,  taking  in  a  long  drag  before  passing  it  back.  shaking  his  head  ,  he  sighed  and  crossed  his  arms.          “  god  ,  are  the  spiders  going  to  kill  us  first  ?  i  think  i’d  rather  face  the  lights.  ”

a  hint  of  acknowledgement  in  the  dark  hues  of  her  otherwise  impassive  gaze  ─  she  had  expected  him  to  ask  for  something  more  personal  before  thinking  of  the  welfare  of  others  and  if  nothing,  could  grudgingly  respect  him  on  the  fact  that  he  proved  her  assumptions  wrong.  ❝  …  i  was  thinking  of  knocking  ‘em  out  but  that  sounds  like  a  more  feasible  option.  ❞  a  joke,  though  it  is  uttered  with  a  completely  straight  face  save  for  the  slight  twitch  to  one  corner  of  her  lip.  ❝  no  offense  but  you’d  need  more  than  medical  training  out  there  …  married,  right  ?  i  think  i’ll  work  easier  without  having that  on  my  head,  if  anything  …  happens.  ❞  (  ❛  if  you  die  out  there ❜,  she  wants  to  say,  though  she  doesn’t.  there’s  no  need  to  state  the  obvious  anymore.  )  ❝  you  could  give  me  a  list  ?  ❞

from  a  state  of  vigilant  repose  (  such  a  strange  combination  of  words  ─  how  does  one  keep  wary  whilst  resting  ?  a  trick  adopted  from  the  soldiers  around  now  becomes  a  useful  attribute  )  does  she  observe  the  half  of  the  warehouse  most  closest  to  her  watch  point,  seemingly  asleep  yet  constantly  triggered  from  inclined  position  at  the  slightest  of  sounds.  the  red - orange  glow  of  a  cigarette  tip  draws  attention  and  she  pushes  off  the  wall  to  stride  over  with  purposeful  gait.  (  her  father  used  to  smoke,  when  his  fists  gave  out  and  his  heart  began  to  weaken  ─  she  hated  the  smell  as  a  girl  but  found  herself  comforted  by  the  cloud  of  nicotine  that  rose  from  the  other  survivor.  )  ❝  that’s  alright  …  not  a  big  smoker.  i’m  going  for  a  search  later  on,  medical  supplies  and  fresh  bottles  at  a  nearby  pharm.  need  anything  ?  ❞  if  she  cared  to  look,  over  the  counter  smokes  could  be  swiped  along  with  whatever  bandages  she  could  find  but  lou  wouldn’t  offer  unless  he  asked.

cash had been making sure that everything was in order.  he was slow to trust and even though he was happy to be part of a group, it still made him a tad bit uneasy.  whenever his mind was restless, which happened a lot now that the sun was nowhere in sight, he liked to wander around the warehouse taking mental notes of potential hazards or places for his family to hide.  “oh no worries,” he said in a gentle tone,  “i don’t smoke, but now that i know you do, i’ll keep an eye out for more.”

 She stepped out from where she’d been hiding, observing him. Alice had run out of cigarettes a few days ago herself, and could feel her body craving the nicotine. It made her feel weak. “So my chances of bumming one off of you are gone then, huh?” She sighed heavily and ran a shaky hand through her hair. “You know this whole thing makes me regret not following through with my New Years Resolution last year and actually quitting smoking..” She stood a distance away from him, smelling the smoke from the cigarette as it curled into the air. 

rory had been sitting around trying to get the courage to approach anyone in the warehouse when she spotted the man with the cigarette. he looked nice enough, and she really didn’t mind the smell. she walked to him quietly, hoping to announce herself but he spoke first. “no worries. i quit years ago,” she joked. more like she tried two cigarettes when she was 15 and never again. “i hope you stocked up. not sure how many places would have those left. high demand for anything that’ll light.”

“That’s fine, I’m not here for a cigarette,” Lily told him, making sure to keep the annoyance out of her voice. She hated smoking; she though it was a such disgusting habit. But for as much as it got on her nerves, she wasn’t there to fight about it– especially during the apocalypse when tensions were unnaturally high. “I actually wanted to know if I could borrow your lighter. I’m having some trouble lighting a stove, and I’m determined not to eat cold soup for the second day in a row.”

the light burning off of the cigarette with each puff had cj in a trance, god, how much she missed light. craved the heat of a fire. she couldn’t remember how long she was standing there, staring. she figured it was long enough to make her presence known. “i don’t smoke… do you know what those do to your lungs?” she asked, before furrowing a brow, “not that that really matters now given our… circumstances.” 

          𝐇𝐄  𝐖𝐀𝐒𝐍'𝐓  𝐂𝐑𝐀𝐕𝐈𝐍𝐆  𝐀  𝐂𝐈𝐆𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐓𝐓𝐄  until  eli  told  him  he  had  no  more.  originally  ,  he’d  taken  steps  towards  one  of  the  only  people  in  the  compound  he  trusted  to  talk  –  but  at  the  mention  of  no  more  cigarettes  ,  miller’s  mouth  almost  watered.  it  was  typical  human  behavior  –  wanting  what  you  couldn’t  have.  shoving  his  cold  hands  into  his  pockets  ,  he  rolled  his  eyes.            “  couldn’t  control  yourself  ,  huh  ?  ”  he  joked  ,  leaning  on  one  of  the  many  shelves.
