The last time I believe I went to @gomateihawaii was one of my last meals with @shugaray years ago with the #SeeFoodDietCrew - I don’t think I’ve returned because of that memory, it was more that I had other favorite places to go… but I may go back soon. The Spicy Kakuni Udon may have been mild at best, but those udon noodles reminded me of the noodles my mom used to make when I was a kid by hand…and it’s been decades…I’m torn. When I do come back, will it be to recreate a childhood memory, or will I go to enjoy some noodles from a pIace I feel have impressively improved on their dishes? I hope it’s the latter. Across the street from my workplace, I used to grab shave ice from Mr. Jung. His spot is long gone now, but @michael_choy told me that @alohadonutcohnl got soft serve now! I can cross the street for dessert again. You can top your donuts with soft serve there or get a float with their drink of the month, or on a matcha latte. One of my favorite shows on Amazon Prime is Documental - A Japanese show where comedienne put up their own money to compete with each other and take it all by making each other laugh before they do. One of the highlights this week was seeing the Splendid Table podcast hosted by Francis Lam talk with guests about the food issues that Hawai’i has to deal with, including sustainability, authenticity and legacies. It was an enlightening evening, and even if I don’t consider myself a foodie, I do consider myself a serious student of what’s out there regarding food. Come at me. I totally forgot that I pre-ordered this pair of Sashiko Denim by @studiodartisan from @okayamadenim last year and it finally came in! Throughout the entire denim is woven an indigo thread that distinctively will emerge through time and wear, which you can kind of see if you look close enough. Can’t wait to rock this pair. When @nii_superette announced the new direction they were going in, it was quite a surprise to me. I’ve known it ever since I was a kid as the local mom & pop liquor store, and when it was announced that they will no longer sell alcohol, but instead items that follow the self care movement, I had to check it out. Gone are the fridges with Heinekens and Buds, and are replaced with a multitude of drinks that tap into wellness alternatives, including energy drinks, mushroom coffees and more. There’s also snacks that follow keto and diabetic wellness directives to complement the drink assortment. This was mind blowing to me, especially since it’s the first time I’ve seen a local shop tackle this idea, and to see it happen in Waipahu of all places is interesting. Left with a few drinks to try out, and the first one I tried was this “Lightwave” from @kineuphorics to mellow out the afternoon. Check it out if you’re in the area! I don’t know how I got into the aesthetic of @neighborhood_official but I do appreciate the way they do their thing. Since I generally have a harder time to get their dry goods, the best chance I have is getting some of the many collabs they do with companies like @converse who can then bring it closer to American audiences. I’ve always liked the silhouette of the Jack Purcells especially because of their unique toecap ( shout out to @kickshawaii for introducing me to this model #YKWWS ) and the way Neighborhood added their touches to make it straight up gangsta was a win for me. Coming into the new year, I appreciated that I was able to obtain a fairly pristine pair for under $30 plus shipping, as I’m trying not to get overrun with the fear of missing out with the latest out there.
