STUDIO UPDATE | So excited to finally let it be known that I will be joining the School of Visual Arts MFA Art Practice as the 2019 Artist in Residence!! Excited to announce that "I Hate It Here" will be showing at the UMVA Gallery at the @portlandmediacenter Center in Portland, Maine as a part of the upcoming exhibition " The Way Life Is - Maine Working Families and Communities" February 1-22. Opening Reception February 1 The Way Life Is - Maine Working Families and Communities features the work of artists across the state. Painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers, and others draw attention to Maine's workers, families and communities. While workers and their families and communities provide the services and products that distinguish our state, they receive too little of the value they produce. In fact, many Maine communities have been economically depressed for decades. Affording basic medical care and other necessities can be a struggle. Even in the more affluent parts of the state, living wages and affordable and adequate housing are often difficult to obtain. Higher education and technical training are also beyond reach for many working families, rural or urban. In The Way Life Is...Maine artists capture these fundamental inequities in various media and genres including both representational and abstract images. Most importantly, the artists in this exhibit portray "the way life is" in Vacationland, adding their compelling voices to the public discourse on one of the most critical issues facing Maine and humankind. DECEMBER-TODAY \\ And there it is, 2018 highlights. Thanks for humoring me. I am happy to say that I've joined the incredibly talented team at @herearts HERE Arts Center as their Audience Activist, which leads me to where I am today - feeling incredibly blessed and in awe at the amount of loss and joy and change and growth I experienced and witnessed this last year. While I have plans and goals for 2019 - I am open and ready for what else the Universe has in store. <3 Bring it on and see you on the other side. 🙏🏽📸 @themiaannamaria (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsjEUh-HeQM/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1y0uhbug6iqa7
SEPTEMBER-NOVEMBER \\ After a 6-day journey across a very rural America, and an unexpected pitstop in Chicago, I arrived to the Big Apple. Warmly met with open doors and loving arms from friends and family I began the Couch Surf Job Hunt for almost 3 months. That wasn’t stressful. Not at all. Shortly after I found my apartment and started working, my grandmother passed away. Peggy: the woman who taught me to love horses, get dirt under my nails, and to use proper anatomical terminology (she was in the medical field for most of her life). RIP Gramma Horsey 🐎🐴 (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsgSbcpHZ21/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=i8sa3f3vtald

SEATTLE \\ The day Nathan left Maine, I hit the road again. This time my destination was Seattle, WA where I was to perform at the (@yellowfishfestival) Fish Durational Performance Festival. What a strange and unique opportunity to share performance spaces with over a dozen durational performance artists. We're a rare and wacky breed. :) Once the festival wrapped up, I jumped on an Amtrak with a 1-way ticket and a suitcase. Destination NYC. PS. I'm teaming up with Yellow Fish again with some writing - so stay tuned!! 💃🏾 📸 Jillayne Hunter, 35mm / Yellow Fish Festival 📸 Maxwell Bennette Location: @lovecitylove (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsdvBEYnnAn/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1izefrgoxr23z
AUGUST \\ Two days after I finished residency at Skowhegan, I jumped on a plane and headed to Utah to met my perfect nephew, Damon, and spend time with family (Jake & Kayla!!! ) Of course, one can't go to Utah without seeing The Spiral Jetty. I return to Maine was welcomed by my beloved @kabnathan who had just arrived from the Netherlands (this was planned, people)! I met Nathan, who is orginally from France, in Tokyo. We traveled to and through Indonesia together the previous summer. I had the honor and privilege of introducing him to Maine. Our next rendezvous, Nathan...London? 💛💛💛 (at Logan, Utah) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsatlSPnAmw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=2szmhv54nf2f

JULY 4 - SOUND ON // Not long after that little Damon, my nephew, was born. It would be another month before I would hold him in my arms but grrrl, did I celebrate. While at Skowhegan I spent a lot of time gather short snippets of video and sound. I am still not sure exactly what will become of them yet, but this sound-bite and video clip are one of my favs. (at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsZAKFknJKW/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=dfw3ioxska0p
JUNE - AUGUST // After moving out of The Red Haus, I headed to the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture for an 8-week intensive residency. Humbled by the legends, reputation, and history that preceded it, I was folded into a magical land and was granted the freedom to write my own history. The experience sent me away shaken and changed - if I recall correctly…@pinkflamink, I was “licked by your flames and burned so good.” Within a week after arriving I learned that my beautiful Morgan horse Harley passed away at the age of 18. I met Harley when he was 3, trained him, showed him for a hot second, and loved him the entire time. It was one of the most heartbreaking experiences I’ve ever had, and the timing was a not so gentle reminder how little control we have over our own timelines.
