how can you hurt WITH someone if you don't fully understand what they're going through. sure, you can reason that it must be bad and feel sorry for them, but its not going to like, elicit an actual emotional response in you because you also experienced the same/similar...because you didnt

ie both my parents are alive, so when i friend says "i lost a parent", like obviously that sucks, but i'm not re-living that pain alongside with them.

if someone is kicking a dog, i say "stop kicking that dog, you're hurting it", not "you're hurting us" even though i've been kicked before...i'm not at that exact moment LITERALLY feeling the pain of being kicked. i just know it hurts.
