Short disclaimer: Most pictures show clothes of royalty, aristocracy, and burgoisie as their clothes weren’t worn as much and especially not for labour, which is the issue with farmers/workers’ clothes, which also were reused quite often, whether to sew new clothes or have rags. So please keep this in mind!!
It really is very European-centric as I am European as well, and I apologise for it if you expected more from it. I definitely lack the knowledge to determine what are accurate portrayals of other cultures, and to find content for them is really difficult as well. This is why I would encourage you to submit any resources you have or add them below! If you have any book recs or know good pages, please let me know!
Another edit/note: Pinterest has changed a lot since I made the post, so you need to be signed in now to see more than the first row of the boards, I’m really sorry about that! (Also I tested all the links and on my original post they still work, if you’re having isues with that.)
YET ANOTHER EDIT: yes I think we all know by now that you mistook it for menstruation wear. It’s ok. You’re probably the 500th person who mentions it. I get it. Fun fact: most menstruating people just wore what they always wore and just added stuff like period aprons (Abby Cox has an interesting video about it)! Karolina Żebrovska also has a video on menstuation and why it’s so hard to learn something about it!
Also yes, this is primarily women’s wear. At the time I made this post, I didn’t much care about men’s wear, I couldn’t accurately pinpoint whether the suit is 1920s or 1850s, so *on my own boards* I mostly tried to sidestep that issue aside from explicitly dated garments. That’s why. I also never claimed this to be the be-all-end-all, I was mostly enraged how everything vaguely historical was either labelled as “Medieval” or “Victorian” with little to no recognition for any other time period, so I made this post. I never expected it to blow up like this. The post-1920s also weren’t really of interest to me and I just added them out of a feeling of obligation, so they definitely don’t go as hard as they could. Same goes for the Medieval periods.
Another thing: I cannot guarantee anything for pinboards that I didn’t create. Some may have an accidental stray pin that they wanted to pin somewhere else but didn’t notice, others may have taken their boards and completely reformed them. I don’t know. Take everything with a giant pinch of salt. idk if anyone will read this last bit here but at least that’s off my mind now.
Anyway, thank you for all these lovely messages in the tags (yes I still do read them from time to time)!

嗨嚯!
As much as I love this series to bits I do think it can be racial insensitive especially in its designs.
Depictions of Black or Black-coded people
It's the donut lips, Its usually juxtapose darker skin color but not always.
Donut lips aren't inherently bad, I've seen them draw on ducks and non-Black people. the problem arises when its used on a Black or Black-coded characters because its based on offensive depictions I.e Black minstrelsy. While Chief Puddle, Guru Ant and Instructor Moosesha aren't human, Their song uses genres heavily associated with African American culture which is why I think they are all Black coded.
...Although blackface minstrelsy gradually disappeared from the professional theaters and became purely a vehicle for amateurs, its influence endured in later entertainment genres and media, including vaudeville theater, radio and television programs, and the world-music and motion-picture industries of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Also Chief Puddle is the only one in the firefighter group to have these lips. How come they didn't add those lips to the background firefighters?
Depictions of East Asians (exuding any Japanese depictions)
^ One depicting what Parappa thinks Ms.Ma looks like, the other is a background character who's a delivery man for a Chinese restaurant
Dash for eyes (Except for Ms.Ma)
Yellow or Yellow like hue for their Skin
While there isn't much characters that have more than 5 minutes of screen time, the ones that are spotted are designed in a racist sense.
The dash for eyes is a mocking depiction of monolids/epicanthic fold because its a joke "Asian eyes" and yellow is more based on the racial moniker. It's a major reason I avoid coloring Ms.Ma yellow because it's too reminiscent of racist depictions of East Asians in U.S media. USamericans & Europeans has color monikur for East Asians which is yellow.
"The supposed danger posed to Western interests by the increasing population of Asian peoples, especially as depicted in print media in the late 1800s and early 1900s."
Meaning of Yellow Peril by Wordnik
While shes not the epitome of Yellow peril, I suspect her design was influenced by Yellow peril propaganda.
Ms.Ma's color changes drastically depending if shes in the game or not. She's orangish-yellow within the game but outside the games she colored bright yellow.
Another thing I noticed, Master Onion is obviously Japanese-coded but when you compare him to Ms.Ma the handling is different.
They're both East Asians however Master Onion is Japanese and Ms.Ma is Chinese
Chop chop Master Onion can speak English, has called himself "Tamanegi Sensei" which i think is just Japanese for "Onion teacher" however Ms.Ma does not speak English or Chinese. They gave her a fictitious language which is understood through subtitles
all in all it just differentiates her from the other characters, at least in my opinion.
West Asians (There only instance)
"Arab Army with too many weapons"
Despite it being just being concept art it does show how they were gonna depict West Asians in their game.
When you compare the "Arab" army to the british, You can see the difference in intent. The Arab one has too many weapons where as the british and american ones are "neat/proper and or goofy," like they have absurd weapons but the Arab army has genuine guns as well as swords.
The U.S military has used propaganda which villainizes anyone who isn't white/Goes against U.S interests so I dont feel like its a stretch. Its a way to justify military intervention if you see the enemy as dangerous and deserving. Its a good thing they scrapped it for whatever reason.
Option 2 "British army" design fighting against the antagonist's army of robotic dummies.
Conclusion/Final thoughts
Idk just food for thought, something to keep in mind. I'd prefer it if you avoid these in the future.
New gig coming up for Milkcan
In collaboration with @kichiart and @hyperchaotixart, Source Filmmaker and digital artwork make sweet, sweet love to each other within 72 hours (and 2 days before everyone’s favourite Hallmark Holiday, Valentine’s Day) to create some cakes based off our favourite 9 mercenaries. The French, by the way, is deliberately as Francophone rage-inducing as we could have made it.
The TF2Maps.net mirror is here. The dA mirror for full-size 1080p version is here.
Thank you to TF2Maps.net for hosting the jams, and thank you to Kichi and Logan for helping me out a ton for these! Hope everybody’s enjoyed the content being pushed out for the jam so far, as well as inspired to keep doing so with the knowledge they might have learned if this is their first time participating.
This is adorable! What are the other sweets shown in the image? Also does pauling have a treat?
This cake, which is VLEK’s Pie Raw hat for Pyro, is actually not chocolate but a very burnt cake put back together by mixing the crumbs with frosting, hence why its weight seems to be collapsing on itself.
These cupcakes are the small birthday/Pyroland health kit cupcakes, but chocolate with cream cheese or vanilla frosting.
These are berry/vanilla triple-layer cakes, topped with a chocolate ganache, glazed berries and a chocolate coin.
These are two-layer matcha cakes with frosting, decorated with a pirouline straw and a Jimi Jam cookie, in theme for the 72 Hour Jam.
These are cheesecakes (potentially mocha?) with graham cracker crust, topped with frosting as well as a chocolate shaving and a macaron.
These are dome cremeux or mirror icing cakes with chocolate mousse (mont blanc style?), garnished with a glazed strawberry and two chocolate pirouline straws.
These are red velvet cakes with cream cheese frosting, topped with chocolate sprinkles and a chocolate heart.
Miss Pauling doesn’t have her own cake, probably because she’s too busy having to also prep them and get them out to the front counter - but I imagine she sneaks a little taste out of all of the above when Helen’s not looking. Who knows, maybe somebody will come up with TF2 NPC-themed desserts too!
