I found this digital drawing/poster on google, but have seen it around the internet before. The audience would be the general public, and maybe even Jaws fans too because it draws their eye to the inspired design of the poster. The image’s purpose is to show how dangerous straws are to turtles. The original poster is a real shark with a human on top, to show how this one particular shark from the movie “Jaws” was dangerous and could kill the human (an inaccurate portrayal of sharks, but still a good movie). The image definitely shows pathos. That cute little turtle up on the top looks happy to be swimming about in the ocean, not knowing of the dangers of plastic below it. This poster shows that plastic is deadlier than we make it out to be, especially to marine life.Â
This image does utilize the CRAP principles of design. There is a contrast of colors, where the straws are bright and colorful and the water a dark blue. The straws are bright and colorful to help them stand out in the photo, but it is also quite ironic because what they do to the environment is not all bright and colorful or sunshine and rainbows. There is repetition in the colors of the straws. Â The poster is aligned quite well, with the turtle being directly above the straw shark, and the title is in the middle as well. The proximity of the animals in the poster is well put, the design is simple and not too busy, but powerful.
The image affects my understanding a little bit; it is well known that plastic straws are not good for the environment and especially sea turtles. But it is still a powerful message that should be shared and taken seriously.
