Kaneda,
Kaneda, I think given his friendship with Tetsuo I’ve kinda come to the conclusion that while tetsuo has a need to be looked after and consoled to maintain his wellbeing, I think Kaneda would have a need to be seen as useful. The fixer, making decisions for people maybe because he thinks it’s his responsibility. Feels guilty when he thinks it’s something he could’ve prevented. Their relationship is cyclical on both ends. And it’s been this way since they were kids. HASHTAG PARENTIFIED!!
Tetsuo
Tetsuo has undiagnosed BPD fo sho. Source? I’m Borderline and I said so. His fear of humiliation and resentment and inferiority complex and the constant need to be in control not really out of actual arrogance but the feeling helplessness and feeling disconnected from society as a human. Dude just needs ssris I fear.
Kaisuke
OKAY these are the fun ones because Kaisuke my freakin homeboy
I hc that Kaisuke is native Ryukyuan (Okinawan). His grandma, his only relative, probably still lives there he calls her once in a while, not often, but he always worries about her. The rest of the gang thinks his Okinawan dialect sounds cool when he slips into it. They’re all Kanto-ben speakers and Yamato ( mainland japan) , which is just standard, so they’re a bit jealous.
I 100% see him as the gang’s mechanic. He’s the one always fixing up the bikes and treating them like they’re people. Talks to them when he works, asks them to behave, thanks them when they run smooth. He’s got names for all of them:
• His: Bururun (Bu-chan) ( Onomatopoeia for a revving engine)
• Kaneda’s: Kanon ( CANON STICKER!!)
• Yamagata’s: Gonta ( corny tough guy name)
• Tetsuo’s: Hari ( needle)
Yamagata
Yama gets written off as the hothead, but honestly I think he’s the one who actually has his shit together the most. He’s loud, but he’s also got common sense. I see him as the one who steps in when things start getting out of control he’ll break up fights, drag idiots out of situations, and chew them out after. Total no-nonsense older brother, even if he’s just as much of a delinquent on paper. The way he reacts to Tetsuo’s change feels less about betrayal and more about grief, like watching someone you trusted go off the rails and knowing you can’t stop it. Out of everyone, Yamagata probably had the clearest idea that their little world was falling apart before the rest did.

It’s not very popular but Kaneda x Kaisuke (Kanekai) is my fave. I love the idea of a survivor’s-type relationship post-events. Kaisuke always struck me as a bit more sensible than the others, but still gets wound up ( maybe a bit anxious even, he’s always kinda thinking stuff over a lot). I think they’d balance each other out in a kind of way. Kaisuke probably fixes Kaneda’s bike late at night without being asked. Talks to it about Kaneda. ( I will not lie though, the tastiest version of this ship for me is mutual pining closet gays with a dash of 80s internalised homophobia because I’m built different)
Tetsuo x Kaori (anime version only!!) under very specific circumstances. In the context of the manga? NO FREAKIN WAY. However!! I love socially inept boy + quiet girl. The kind where he asks “Can I hug you at lunch?” and she says okay and they’re just a bit strange with it. Just sweet. I also have a bit of a silly headcanon that Kaori is a bit of a fuckin’ nerd and a weirdo!! Likes manga and Shojo, Tetsuo thinks that’s only for otaku’s and geeks but he never makes fun of her for it. He just looks very out of place when she convinces him to come to the comic stores with her. ( lowkey think Kaori’s a fujoshi because that’d be really funny)
That being said… I still kinda fuck with Kaneda x Tetsuo. There’s something so codependent about it that’s hard to ignore. Like they’re childhood friends who got twisted up somewhere along the way, and now they’re stuck on opposite ends of something bigger than them. Toxic? Yeah. But THE PAIN IN MY HEART I FELT FOR THEM.
