when i forget to log into ao3 and i have to click proceed to see an adult fic, i actually get a kick out of it. like i am an old timey queen and my bard is apologetic: āgentle lady, dicks doth touch in this next ballad. would you prefer another?ā and i give him a gesture of command like, ānay, you may proceed, minstrel. bring forth the tale of dicksā
hope itās not too late; I made this in Scriptorium
emily wilson says āi wanted to avoid the clever literary allusions of lombardo and fitzgerald, since they are entirely out of place in homeric poetics; the odyssey is based on a pre-existing oral tradition, and cannot make smart little nods to earlier literature, because there was no earlier greek literatureā and on one hand i get what she means and donāt disagree with her translation choices in the passage in question. and i also think what lombardo does in the same passage (two! tennyson allusions) is over the top. on the other hand i disagree that allusions to other later literature are entirely out of place in a translation of homer, for the exact reason that emily wilson takes issue with them. sure, an english translation of homer cannot allude to a pre-homeric oral tradition, but it can allude to an entirely different earlier literary tradition, not to replicate the content of allusion but to replicate the process/sense of the text not like. springing cleanly and allusionlessly from the ether. which is of course an extremely domesticating approach, but i do think it can be done interestingly.* personally i absolutely love translations of classical texts that like. overdomesticate to the point of defamiliarity again. translation of homer that alludes to modern literature so obviously and obtrusively that you have to notice it and go wait What. surely thatās not in homer. and itās not! but now youāve had the experience of There was an allusion, and also been reminded of the partial futility of translation. nice
*i think this approach only really works for texts that already have ācanonicalā status and multiple existing translations, for reasons of not wanting to immediately do meta-translation stuff to a text that cannot be accessed in the target language otherwise. itās about like. shifting the overton window of what a text could mean. instead of building a window from scratch. i donāt like that metaphor but whatever

When you're unable to solve an IT problem at work, there really is nothing quite like having it escalated all the way up the ladder. With every step, there is a degree of smugness about how real my problem is, and that yes, I was right to have trouble with this.
You can get a minor version of this if one IT person solves it but they spend a bunch of time repeating things youāve already tried and when they eventually solve it itās by doing something you wanted to try but didnāt have the requisite permissions to do
Was in a situation where neither I, nor my boss knew what was causing the problem, so we ended up calling one of the head engineers, and ive never experienced anything quite as validating as the moment where said head engineer, after spending several minutes just staring at the problem, quietly said "what the fuck"
Working an office job will truly make you have the wildest enemies, bc why is my nemesis rn a woman Iāve never met and who exclusively haunts me by sending diabolical emails, and also a specific guy who left my company before I even worked here and made the system so fuckass that it ruined procedures for like a year
Yesterday my nemesis (woman Iāve never met and whose face Iāve never seen) sent my office an email so rude, basically saying we had fucked up every project she ever ordered from us, one of the worst emails Iāve ever read in my life.
And it pissed me off so badly that I spent the ENTIRE WORK DAY today compiling evidence from every project my team has ever done for her, pulling past emails sheād sent us, putting together an entire case proving that she had been the problem all along. That she got projects mixed up, that sheād made requests that were nonsensical, literally everything you could possibly imagine. Screenshots of emails, reports weād submitted, EVERYTHING.
This woman in particular has been terrorizing my team for years, her name is almost a slur in my office, I had simply had ENOUGH of her.
I put all of this evidence together and sent it to all of my bosses at 4:30pm. Then I took a long break to eat a sweet treat and drink some tea.
After my break, my bosses all called in an emergency meeting with me and they said they read my report and fucking loved it. And I sat on a teams call with my bossā boss as she wrote my nemesis the scathing email I had always fantasized about sending, using the evidence Iād compiled, and hit send.
It was the most satisfying workday Iāve had since I got hired.

"This story is a tragedy because it didn't have to end this way."
vs
"This story is a tragedy because it was always going to end this way."
I submit for your consideration:
'this story is a tragedy because along the way we got just enough glimpses of alternate timelines and barely-averted prophecies to know that somehow, the way it turned out is the best it could have gone'
Finally, a worthy challenger!
