The Internet of Things
This weekâs reading, âthe internet of thingsâ showed the present age of interconnectivity and threats against it. Â The reality of interconnection is of much comfort to us. Increased convenience, better interactions, improved monitoring are few of the benefits we now derive and foresee for the future. However, with all things we have discussed so far in this class, there are the dangers of privacy, cybercrime, theft, targeted attacks and much more. A common problem associated with Internet of Things (IoT) and most technology, is persistent and reliable communication. Technology has evolved so far in most communities that reliability is not just expected but in most cases, guaranteed. However, nothing is perfect and as such, a complete fail-safe system is not yet fully realized. I am quite skeptical about a full and complete fail-safe system. I remember that there was a power problem on the campus during my first semester in the US. I didnât think much of it until my roommate came back to the room and told me that classes were canceled. I didnât understand at first until I realized how essential power was to all operations on the campus. It was a surprise to me, coming from a country where the power was at best irregular and as such, we had several alternatives to continue with our day to day operations in the absence of power. So also with IoT, internet interruption, software bugs, internet or power access would affect the state of the system and in turn, affect the operations of the day. Â There are many parts of a complete system such as IoT. Another major problem is security and unauthorized access to data. In an interconnected system, data flows freely between devices and services such that improved security is needed on our devices. Pertinent information which when used in harmful ways, such as bioengineered viruses or credit card theft or identity theft can result in disastrous consequences. Â Not just on the user end but also with cloud services, networks can be breached. Though mostly overlooked, displacement of jobs is a problem derived from technology in general. Though technology has brought about radical improvements, unemployment rates are rapidly increasing and the need for general labor and even specialists is becoming obsolete. The rate of employment would keep climbing as artificial intelligence improves. A couple of months back, there was the predominant question âHas Google made me dumber?â. Information is now at the touch of a screen with no mental exertion on figuring things out. Though we have access to more knowledge, we have relegated ourselves to only knowing the minute things that we need to function and leaving anything else to on-demand acquisition and use. As discussed and repeated over the past weeks, privacy is also a concern. With different devices sensing, tracking and measuring, what is left? Information recorded by Fitbit which borders medical data and such should be confidential, but is it treated as such? That does not seem as the case, with possibilities of hiring difference based on such data. Internet of things would bring much comfort and advancement in a lot of areas, however, combating security will be a great feat.
