âMan, the creature who flies through the heavens, who captures the music of the spheres, who is possessed of a power bordering on omnipotence, complains of being weak, ineffectual, and unhappy.â
Real classroom communities are more than just a look. Real communities flourish when we bring together the voices, hearts, and souls of the people who inhabit them. When our vision of community expands to create a culture and climate for thinking (Perkins 1993) â when rigor, inquiry, and intimacy become key components of our definition â itâs essential that we work first to build genuine relationships, establish mutual trust, and create working literate environments.

A playlist of songs I would use in my classroom!Â
I'm interested in work that is purposeful and engaging for me and my students. I'm interested in the dignity of work and in the human desire to mark our existence through work. Much of the "work" of schools is not work at all -- it is make-work or busy-work, meaningless stuff to occupy our time. I want classroom work to be important to students, to me, and when possible, to the larger community.

It is easy to find worksheets online that make kids practice the skills they need to know, but filling out those worksheets is not a meaningful experience. And I believe deep learning happens when deep feeling is involved (this is true in my own learning experiences: if I am feeling bored reading for a class, I will not remember much of what I learned, but if I can shift my way of thinking to focus on the historic significance of the subject matter or the way it affected peoples lives -- aka the significance of the material -- I will remember the material long past the exam date. It sticks with me, it changes me. It is the type of experience I want for my students. The only way to do that is to find a meaningful way for my students to learn the skills they need. That is much harder than handing out worksheets, but it is what students need to learn deeply.Â
Every feature of life in school carries messages: this is how people learn, this is how people think, this is the nature of knowledge, this is what is valuable.

This quote reminds me that my words, actions, and choices carry a lot of meaning, even if it is not directly felt. My students will internalize the messages their experiences in my classroom sends them. It is up to me to make sure my words, actions, and choices leave them feeling inspired to learn rather than discouraged.Â

Teaching at its best is not a matter of technique -- it's primarily an act of love.

Children need to be valued and supported, loved and encouraged, nourished and challenged. Leave the "saving" at the door. Teach.

My Educational Philosophy: The Purpose of Education and the Role of the Teacher
As an 18-year-old still feeling fresh out of high school, it is intimidating to write a comprehensive statement about my personal educational philosophy. I feel that there is still much to be learned and that nothing I can say in this frazzled freshmen state can truly convey why I am so passionate about education and how I am going to use this passion when I teach. But, with the knowledge that my philosophy will never be labeled âperfectâ but will remain in a state of constant revision as I grow and gain experience, I will attempt to write my beliefs about education as I feel them now.
I believe that the purpose of education is to create a better future. It ideally creates a better future at the individual level by giving students knowledge that will make their lives better. It creates better future at social level by enabling social upward mobility. It creates a better future for the nation by raising a new generation with the knowledge that can move us forward.
As a teacher, I will have a certain level of responsibility to insure that the education I provide is fulfilling these purposes. I will try to teach in a way that will encourage lasting personal and intellectual growth, so that my students will be able to use what theyâve learned in my class to help them do better in the future. I will do this by putting emphasis on applying and discussing information, instead of assigning work that focuses on strict memorization, which often fades with time.
To insure that the education I will provide will fulfill its purpose of enabling upward social mobility, I will construct my class in a way that prevents my studentsâ success from being dependent upon the education level of their parents. Often times students fall behind because they have no one to read to them because their parentsâ canât read or because their parents are too busy trying to make ends meet, thus, often condemning them to the same educational and economic fate as their parents. To prevent this I will work one on one with those students falling behind, and commit myself to whatever educational techniques seems most appropriate. I will also politically advocate for educational policies that give students in poor performing districts access to better schools, because the poor schools and lack of choice are locking students into their social classes.
I say that I will be political active because I believe that teachers have a special responsibility to politically advocate for their students who cannot stand up for themselves on the political front. I believe teachers have a special knowledge about the what is most appropriate for their classrooms, and that the world would be a better place if teachers would speak up to a government that listened to their ideas about school improvement and reform. I plan to be politically active in order to work towards fulfilling the pedagogical purpose of creating a better nation for the future. Â
