I think he was wondering why you weren't surprised that Gerald talked, but you weren't so that let him know that you could always hear. Also, if Gerald could talk, wouldn't that mean that other rocks could talk too, or he's the only one that gained sentience or a voice that could be heard?

Every one of your regenerations have a quirky habit whenever they try to act calm and rational, or you become slightly irrational and someone has to ground you just to make you rational again: Rose, Amy, River Song, your granddaughter, and even your past traveling companions from your previous regenerations' adventures.
