There were days when Poppy loved her job and then there were days like today. It seemed like nothing wanted to go her way. She had woken up late, people hadn’t shown up to see her, and those that did seemed to be falling apart faster than she could help them gather the pieces back up. The one thing that she was grateful for was that she could clear her thoughts when she was walking home from her stop on the bus route. It wasn’t her favorite thing to do in the winter, but it was better than trying to drive in the city most of the time. Even over the music coming from her headphones, she heard the undeniable sound of fabric as it ripped. Her blue eyes squeezed shut in frustration as she took a deep breath. Her eyes shot open as she turned on her heel and stared down at the scattered contents of her bag. “Why does God hate me,” she grumbled to herself as she pulled the headphones out of her ears and knelt to try and gather her things.
edith’s apartment was only a few blocks away from her shop but that night was particularly cold and she didn’t feel like braving that weather. so, she rode the bus in silence as always, her attention alternating between the catalogue in her gloved hands and the passing scenery in the window. when she climbed off the vehicle, she fell in with a herd of people making their way down the sidewalk. that is, until she found herself almost stepping on some spilled items, as well as the person they belonged to.
“here, let me help you.” edith squatted to help the woman collect her belongings as the swarm moved around them. she smirked a bit at her comment. edith’s mother was never religious and edith had only stepped foot in church a handful of times at the request of acquaintances. but that judeo-christian god did always seem a bit spiteful to her. maybe even enough to cause the spillage of one’s handbag. “is that everything? don’t wanna leave anything here.”
