The Small Kitchen Change That Made Me Feel Like a Better ParentΒ
I didn't expect a kitchen drawer to change how I feel about my parenting. But it did.
It started on an ordinary Tuesday. I was packing my son's lunch, and I pulled out yet another plastic container with a missing lid. Half my drawer was plastic pieces that didn't match anymore. Some were stained. Some smelled weird no matter how many times I washed them. I remember just standing there thinking, "Why does this feel so hard every single morning?"
That night, I sat down and made one simple decision. I was going to slowly swap out our old plastic kitchen stuff for things that were sturdier, safer, and better for the planet. Not a full kitchen makeover. Just small swaps, one at a time.
Where I Started
The first thing I changed was our ice cube trays. I had no idea plastic ice trays could hold onto smells and stains, but ours did. I switched to metal ice cube trays, and honestly, it felt silly how happy this made me. They were easy to clean, they didn't crack, and the ice actually tasted like ice again.
Next came popsicles. My kids love popsicles in summer, but the plastic molds we had were falling apart. I got stainless steel popsicle molds instead, and they've lasted through two summers now without a single crack. No weird taste, no plastic smell, just popsicles that taste like the fruit we put in them.
The Lunch Box Problem
The biggest change was lunch. I moved to stainless steel lunch containers for my son's school lunches. At first I worried it would be a hassle, but it turned out to be the opposite. They don't stain, they don't hold onto smells, and they don't warp in the dishwasher like our old plastic ones did.
I also picked up lunch boxes with compartments so I could pack a few different foods without needing five separate containers. It made mornings faster, and my son actually liked seeing his lunch laid out in little sections instead of one messy pile.
For weekends and quick meals, I started using stackable lunch containers. They sit neatly in the fridge instead of tumbling out every time I open the door. Small thing, but it made our kitchen feel calmer.
Food On the Go
We also do a lot of car trips and after-school activities, so I needed something that kept food warm or cold for hours. I picked up a good thermos for food, and it's been great for soups, pasta, and even leftover rice. My daughter takes warm oatmeal to school in it now, and it's still warm by the time she eats it at 10 a.m.
For leftovers, I started using an instant pot container that fits right into our pressure cooker. It saves me from dirtying an extra bowl every time I want to store food straight from the pot.
The Dinner Table Changed Too
Even our dinner plates changed. I swapped our old chipped plates for stainless steel dinner plates for the kids. They don't break when they get dropped, which happens more than I'd like to admit in our house. No more sweeping up broken plate pieces before breakfast.
Cleaning Got Simpler Too
Once I started paying attention to what we used in the kitchen, I looked at our cleaning supplies too. I switched to zero waste cleaning products, things that come in refillable bottles or bars instead of another plastic spray bottle every month. It's a small shift, but it means less plastic waste piling up under our sink.
Why This Made Me Feel Like a Better Parent
None of this was one big fix. It was just one small swap at a time; better products replacing things that were falling apart anyway. But somewhere along the way, I noticed something. My kids started asking questions about why we use metal instead of plastic. My son told his teacher his lunch box is "good for the earth." That one sentence meant more to me than I expected.
I'm not saying eco friendly kitchen products fixed my parenting. But they gave me a small, steady way to show my kids that little choices matter. And that feeling, of doing something small and right, again and again, is what made me feel like I was finally getting something right as a parent.
If you're looking for a place to start, I found a lot of good options at Ecozoi, where I picked up most of these swaps for our kitchen.
