Omega clutches the egg close to her chest, twisting it in her delicate grasp and regarding it curiously. She doesn’t seem too pleased with babysitting an egg— wondering if it’ll hatch and she’ll become a single mother at the ripe age of twelve… or will it remain unfertilized and she’ll have to be content with scrambled eggs for the next morning.

Although, it is only an egg. Perhaps we are being a bit protective. The extent of damages that an egg is capable of is relatively low.

Nice! I didn’t used to think much about rain. It was just what was outside most of the time when we were near an exterior window when we were cadets. That wasn’t very often.

Once we started to go on missions I got to see rain in a lot more places, where it was different. It smells different on some planets when it starts to rain, I’m sure @obviously-99 would know a lot more about why if you are interested in that kind of thing. I just kinda like that it does.

The aroma of rain is called 'petrichor'. It is actually caused by bacteria! More specifically, a bacteria called 'geosin'. It is a very common bacteria and can be found in nearly every biome on most planets, which is where the genterally universal idea of 'rain scent' is familiar with everyone. It is simply the scent of that particular bacteria dying.

Geosin is also a type of alcohol molecule, which is why its scent is so strong. Since most bacteria thrive in wet or moist soil (or places in general), it releases its scent more prominently after a dryspell. The longer the dryspell, the more potent the petrichtor.

Of course, the smell is also dependent on the biome it's in and the acidity of the rain.

In most urban environments, the chemicals in the atmosphere tend to be more acidic, which can cause a particularly aromatic reaction when coming in contact with organic debris or other chemicals on the ground. It breaks the soils surface, and releases the minerals trapped inside, which can react heavily with those other chemicals.

Humans' ability to smell geosmin as well as they due does back to our common ancestors, and their ability to find soil that would bear the best crops during the growing seasons.

The rain on Kamino smelt very strong and fresh. The entirety of the planet was covered in water, and it very seldom didn't rain. The water cycle was in constant flow.
