Black pearls by anotherwanderer
The work “Rain” by the artist Nazar Bilyk is a symbol of the dialog between man and nature. Behind this theme may hide a series of themes: the rain falling from the sky onto the ground, symbolizing the fertility of mind, lucidity, man’s capacity to to awaken and look at the sky and ask questions, wanting to achieve wisdom and the profundity of the infinite sky. At the same time the artist shows us other connotations of the work, playing with the scale of the drop of water, indicating man’s true size in nature, the difficulty of the individual to understand the environment. Nazar Bilyk says that all the sculptures form this series are autobiographical, and are based on his own turmoil.
A thousand miniature people have slowly melted away in a Berlin square in an effort to draw attention to melting ice caps in Greenland and Antarctica. Brazilian artist Nele Azevedo carved the figures out of ice and placed them on steps in the central Gendarmenmarkt square where they began to melt within about half an hour. (Source)

Wonderful Places To Visit #6

The Town that is Literally Living Under a Rock
Welcome to the town of Setenil de las Bodegas in Spain, where around 3,000 inhabitants are living quite literally, under a rock.
This small white washed town northeast of Cadiz has a unique setting along a narrow river gorge eroded by the Rio Trejo river, with many of the houses being built into and under the walls of the gorge itself.
Believe it or not, people chose to settle here for practical reasons. The natural caves of Setenil turned out to be ideal living quarters because rather than needing to build entire houses to keep out the heat in the summer and the cold in the winter, all they needed to build was a facade. It is believed people have been living here since pre-historic times.
I believe another trip to Spain is in order….
