thinking so hard about how people remember each other. i think, for people you've known a long long time, there's always kind of a point in time that cements your image of this person. i don't know if i'm saying it right but what i mean is this:

kakashi and gai grow old together, and they hardly remember the people they were when they were younger, but when gai thinks about kakashi, he sees in his mind's eye the version of them when they were ten. and also fourteen, when kakashi dug up his mum's grave with him.

gai thinks about fourteen-year-old neji, in the hospital, bursting into tears all of a sudden as he finally broke in front of gai.

gai thinks about nine-year-old lee, training determined and alone in the yard, fire burning in his eyes.

I'm in fucking tears man Gai actually managed to miss all Akatsuki members' confrontations against Konoha (Pain just ended up running off some distance away to lure Eight-Tails Naruto)😭😭😭save for those 30 seconds where armless Deidara was somehow holding HIM and HIS TAIJUTSU ORIENTED STUDENTS off

it really took until Obito's lonely crackhead ass for him to actually engage with one of them😭😭and of course one of Konoha's basic laws "glorious thick browed beast in green latex >>>> seething Uchihacel" prevailed

Gai was actually mogging all of Akatsuki so hard Kishimoto had to actively drag him away from any possible confrontations because we need for Akatsuki to have some aura points
