If you approach this planet with hostile intent , know this : We will defend ourselves. We will defend humanity. We will defend… our home.
Unwillingly named the "temporary" leader of the government. It wasn't temporary.
A man who's been fighting a war against someone who used to be his best friend for millions of years. Despite the war having jaded him , he still cares about his cause as much as ever.
Peepaw that kicks ass and is very good at it. But he doesn't enjoy it very much. In fact , he dislikes kicking ass so much that he's refused to kill the One Guy that he needed to kill to end the war. This shit could've been over before it started if he wasn't sentimental.
That leadership position he got ? Yeah it basically made him god. Yeah he forcefully forgot most of who he was before he was god. Yeahhh now that he's not the face of a war movement he really doesn't know what he's going to do. Yeah. He's got undiagnosed anxiety and now that the adrenaline's gone he has a lot of chronic pain and anxiety attacks to catch up on.
Really really really really loves all living things. He'd cry if he accidentally stepped on someone. Which is why he's being extra careful.

Irving is glad to be away from Glacier's Peak, glad to escape the blinding snow and biting cold for as long as he can manage. Though he finds Luctenmire gloomy, it's preferable to both the dry heat of Sunset's End and the intimidating tech of ENCOY. He's the last person alive to be determining what constitutes normality, but to him it feels the most... normal, its denizens eccentric fashion choices aside.
Well. Mostly normal.
In front of his eyes, an absolute enormous being exits an equally enormous building ( he'd assumed it at first to be a warehouse of some sort, a storage facility ), takes a step onto the street some feet away from him, and collapses inwards until a bulky vehicle of some sort sits in its place, as unassuming as any oversized red-and-white piece of machinery can be. Irving gapes, opening and closing his mouth. The vehicle's headlights seem to pierce straight through him.
"I— I'm sorry," he stammers, hands lifting, and starts to back away. "I saw nothing."
FOR A MOMENT , OPTIMUS HAS FORGOTTEN just how imposing he seems to humans. While he still hasn't gotten used to walking around freely in his bot mode around humans ( both because he doesn't want to intimidate the denizens of this place , and because he'd rather not have an accident ) , he has started taking more time to transform. That , and he really hasn't been looking out for humans that may be watching him - because he no longer has reason to hide , does he ? The war , as everyone else has recounted to him , is over. The only Decepticon left here is Starscream , and he by himself is not that much of a threat.
STILL , WHILE HE REMEMBERS TO LOOK before he steps , he doesn't see anyone as he steps into the street. It isn't until he's finally in his vehicle mode that he sees someone standing in front of him , illuminated only in the murky darkness of Luctenmire by his headlights. The look of absolute horror on the poor human's face is enough to make him feel absolutely awful.
HE IMMEDIATELY DIMS HIS HEADLIGHTS , not sure if it would be more terrifying if he were to switch back. ❛ It is quite alright. ❜ He finally says cautiously. ❛ I did not mean to alarm you , nor do I mean you any harm. ❜
"But why? To what end? It doesn't make any sense. And Bumblebee and Arcee— they would have told me if something happened to you." Yes, Ratchet had missed a fair bit of the ongoings on Cybertron after its restoration, busy as he was back on Earth, but if Optimus had disappeared for so much as a minute without contact someone would have called him. To be plucked from different points in a timeline, seemingly without disrupting the flow of events whatsoever, seems... improbable. He would say impossible were it not for the fact that they were standing here now due only to the intervention of some being with power they do not yet comprehend - and Ratchet has witnessed many such impossible things during the course of the war.
There are other possibilities, of course. There have been cases - Ratchet has dealt with them personally - of the Matrix withholding information ( not deliberately, as far as Ratchet is aware; he doubts it has enough sentience to make that determination and rather merely archives information that is deemed no longer pertinent to a Prime's leadership capabilities ) from Optimus, but that data always resurfaced eventually. Usually when it was needed. When it was relevant, he's always assumed. But knowing the state of Cybertron, of Megatron, of his own frame... Ratchet can't imagine a world in which that isn't essential information to keep in the forefront of Optimus' processor.
After all, he can imagine this is unsettling. Having only second-hand accounts of your own demise. Though Ratchet is not so sure that he'll be able to push the matter aside for some time yet, the very least he can do is try to dissuade Optimus from lingering on the topic. At least until they have a better lead. Still, he can already tell the other 'Bot will overthink it despite all of Ratchet's best efforts... and he can't entirely blame him in this instance.
In light of that, he's glad to see he's at least capable of putting forth some effort to let the matter rest. Whether it's a facade or not is hard to say when it's Optimus, but Ratchet will take it, and he huffs at the remark. "Yes, well. As I recall, our last landing wasn't half so smooth. At least the organics here haven't drawn weapons on us. Yet," he adds. He would like to claim that he wasn't half so unhappy back then, having voluntarily followed Optimus to Earth... but the truth was that none of them were happy. They were fleeing the remains of their dying world. To call it voluntary is a stretch in and of itself, and the lack of warm welcome hadn't exactly gotten them started off on the right foot. "Not to mention the human liaison," at least that's what he's been considering him, "afforded me a housing unit located in the desert. Far too familiar is a severe understatement."
RATCHET IS DEEP IN MOURNING. Optimus recognizes it far better than he ever hoped he would be able to , but the two are far too close for him not to see the signs when they appear. Besides , Ratchet has mourned for much less , as hard as he tries to hide it. Being a doctor during war is a fate Prime would wish upon no one ── the fact that it was thrust upon his old friend with no warning was something he has deeply regretted to this day. The effect it has had on her , too , is clear. You cannot save every patient , no matter how hard you try. Ratchet has a way of taking those things personally ── blaming herself for every Cybertronian that died under her watch , whether she had any role in healing them or not. And that has made her resentful. Made her push against him , do horribly risky things if there was even a chance that it could help them.
OPTIMUS DID NOT BLAME HER. The two had their disagreements. They often fought over Optimus’ ideals , his mercy , how he had let Megatron slip from his grasp one too many times. There was bound to be anger , amplified only by the loss they were surrounded at all sides by. She mourned for the loss of Bumblebee’s voice box , for Primus’ sake. Cursing the field medic that couldn’t heal him ── though it was destroyed beyond what even a miracle could fix. At least , that was what they had once thought. But the Allspark has a way of surprising even the most composed of them. Still , if their roles were reversed , and Ratchet was the one who had died , Optimus knew in his Spark that he would not be handling this nearly as well. To be faced with your oldest friend , unaware of the fact that he had died , could be both a dream come true and a waking nightmare.
❛ I HAVE QUESTIONS AS WELL , OLD FRIEND. ❜ And with every second that the two talk do more questions arise. But that was not a pressing matter at this very moment , not when they had plenty of time to answer them. ❛ Though I’m afraid that neither of us have the answers , nor will we for some time. ❜ He needed to focus on the positive ─ Cybertron was alive and well again , reconstruction has started ; their efforts meant something , even if he was not there to see it himself.
HE NODS WITH RECOLLECTION AT HER RESPONSE. ❛ Yes , so far it has been a lot less eventful than our time on Earth had been. ❜ There was still time for things to change , however. Though he stayed hopeful that they were brought here with peaceful intentions. The thought of Ratchet being placed in the desert faction of all places is one that amuses him greatly. She wasn’t shy with voicing her distaste during their stay in Nevada ── so to hear that their “sorting system” so to speak had placed her in Yesteryear’s closest equivalent is enough to make him chuckle. ❛ Perhaps we could switch , then. My housing is quite . . gloomy.❜ And he doesn’t mind the desert. In fact , he had grown rather fond of it.
a series of open starters for Optimus this month, with one for each faction! stolen from my good friend jax.
step 1: open read more
step 2: peruse starters
step 3: respond to whichever one appeals to your character (just let me know which one you're responding to in your reblog!)
i. a matter of energy - GLACIER'S PEAK.
AFTER ARRIVING HERE , THE MATTER OF ENERGON had completely slipped his mind. As far as he knew , there wasn't any here - and if there was , he had no way to properly mine it. But it was prudent now more than ever that he at least looked for it. What would happen if there wasn't any was something he didn't want to dwell on.
HIS SEARCH HAD BEEN GOING just as well as he had expected , coming up completely empty - handed. That is , until he spots someone walking down the street with a horribly familiar crystal in their hands. It doesn't take him long to kneel before them , pointing to it with as much composure as he can muster. ❛ I apologize for the intrusion , but I must know where you got that. ❜
ii. it's rough and coarse and gets everywhere - SUNSET'S END ( challenge )
THE VAST , SPRAWLING DESERT OF SUNSET'S END reminded him of Nevada. There was one difference that Optimus was quick to note , however. That was the subject of the weather. Earth had its fair share of storms , and Nevada was no stranger to them , but he had never experienced anything like this before. The wind that billowed was strong enough to blow even him back an inch or so , feet digging into the sand as it did. Sand stings his optics , and he turns his attention towards the source of footsteps nearby. ❛ I do not think it is safe to be out here at this time. You should turn back. ❜
iii. size matters - ENCOY
OUT OF ALL OF THE FACTIONS , ENCOY was one of the hardest for Optimus to navigate. He had been trying to stray away from the more populated areas ( or stay in his alt mode when necessary ) for fear of accidentally harming someone , but he at least wanted to scope out every inch of this place. And without his holoform available to him , he just had to watch his step.
HIS JOURNEY THROUGH THE HIGH - TECH STREETS had gone without incident until he heard the faintest crunch underfoot. He lifts his leg , and he almost can't even see what it was that he had flattened. Carefully , he maneuvers himself so he can kneel down , lifting up the poor robotic creature ( he has heard them called . . munchies ) with his hands. ❛ Oh . . oh no. I am so sorry. ❜
iv. home is where the spark is - LUCTENMIRE
BEING PROVIDED WITH AN APPROPRIATELY SIZED HOUSE was the least Optimus was expecting out of this arrangement. And yet , here it was. It towered above Luctenmire's other buildings ( though it looked the exact same save for its height ) , making it easy to spot , at least. Still , he didn't exactly like spending time there. It was empty except for him , and while he appreciated his solitude from time to time , there was a point where it went from him being by his lonesome to him being lonely.
HE EXITS HIS HOME , TAKING EXTRA CARE to look down at the threshold before taking his first step out , just in case. Just to be safe , taking a few steps onto the street before transforming into his vehicle mode.
THE EVENTS THAT HAVE UNFOLDED THUS FAR have left Optimus with far more questions than answers. Thanks to the Forums , he is at least aware of the Cybertronian presence here , but every single one of them is utterly convinced that he should be dead. Still , that is not the only thing he's questioned since his arrival. One of the other pressing matters is Knockout himself. Last Optimus had checked , he was still with the Decepticons ; and yet , he had mentioned something about being inspired to do great things after his death.
IT TOOK HIM A WHILE TO FINALLY ENCOUNTER the other , the thick fog that has enveloped Luctenmire making it hard to pick out exactly whose headlights were shining in his direction. The weather conditions on Earth had been unpredictable enough , but this was something else entirely. He squints ( perhaps being in vehicle mode was not the worst idea , given the circumstances ) in the direction of the light - just barely being able to make out the shining red paint of the car before him.
❛ KNOCKOUT , ❜ He asks , tone laced with the slightest bit of uncertainty. ❛ Is that you ? ❜

He'd heard, briefly, that Optimus was supposed to be dead - it made enough sense that he believed it. That level of despair the medic held in his eyes upon revealing it was hard to fake, and everyone else ( knockout ) had sounded surprised to see him once more; enough so that the Prime himself seemed confused. Besides, it just made sense. Optimus always did sound incredibly " holier than thou " and ready to sacrifice himself for " the greater good ". Certainly quicker than anyone with working self preservation instincts.
It'd be surprising to see him regardless, but his debatable state of existence only makes it more of a shock. She can't help the way she looks over his frame, as if to see any signs of what ( maybe a fusion canon ) could've done him in; Primus knows that despite - or maybe because - of Ratchet's patch job, it's more than obvious on him. There's no motion to approach closer than where he'd stopped upon seeing the Prime, clearly wary of his presence and expecting some retaliation, but he doesn't move to flee either. Something about curiosity being deadly.
"Well, if it isn't Cybertrons saviour, risen from the Allspark. How unfortunate."
OPTIMUS HAS YET TO TRULY COME TO TERMS WITH THE FACT that every other Cybertronian here was aware of his death save for him. Being brought to a foreign environment with no recollection of how he got there was bad enough , but being told of his own demise ? For any other 'Bot , it may have been too much to handle. Even as Prime , he finds it hard to wrap his mind around , no matter how long he spends trying to analyze every bit of information he gets surrounding his death.
LUCKILY HE WAS VERY WELL AWARE OF STARSCREAM'S PRESENCE HERE , no matter the . . convincing Megatron impression he had tried to pull on the forums. But as his optics focus on the Decepticon ( a title which he has yet to denounce , even considering the end of the war - but that doesn't come as much of a surprise to him ) they widen at the mere state of him. Both Cybertronians had their separate encounters with the Allspark , it seems. Close calls , perhaps , but Optimus was still not all too sure of the extent of his own demise. By the injuries present on the Seeker that stands before him , however , he can deduce that the patch job had to have been urgent. And recent , all things considered.
AS THE TWO STAND FACE TO FACE , neither of them make a move. He has no intent of meeting Starscream with hostility , no matter how their past meetings have gone. ❛ Starscream. Or should I say . . Megatron ? ❜ To think he would fall for such a thing. Though . . there was a small part of him that thought the whole ordeal just the slightest bit amusing.
He can tell Optimus is hurt, confused at the very least, and he does feel guilty for it. But how can he possibly explain how this looks from Ratchet's perspective? He's never once doubted his memory, and most definitely not when it pertains to something half so important as this. He's imagined such a scenario plenty, of course. Optimus dying. It felt like Optimus himself viewed it as a foregone conclusion, some days, and Ratchet has spent every waking minute of his career fighting against the very notion. But that wasn't the case this time around. He couldn't have just made it up, and yet he likewise couldn't have conjured up anything half as real as this: as the fact that Optimus is very much alive and himself and standing in front of him now.
"Bumblebee—" it's not as though he has to think back too far for what exactly Optimus is referring to. It's another item on a very long list of things he knows he'll never hope to forget. But Bumblebee's defeat at Megatron's hands, his miraculous recovery, having his voice returned to him, the end of the war... that was...
"That was months ago. What of everything that happened afterward? Unicron's return, the retrieval of the AllSpark?" He wracks his mind for an explanation, a solution. Could this at all be like the time the Matrix was taken from Optimus? He'd lost so many of his memories then. But this... the all-too temporary disposal of Megatron happened so recently. It seems too selective, in this instance, doesn't it? Perhaps Optimus did journey back out of the Well, at a cost. "You mean to tell me you don't remember any of it?" Though it sounds almost accusatory, desperate as he is to understand, Ratchet searches his face with only genuine inquiry.
It seems like such a cruel thing to have taken from him. The memory of seeing their planet restored and rebuilt. Ratchet had already felt it unfair that Optimus did not live to see life returned to Cybertron thanks to the AllSpark, but this goes a step beyond that. What else could it be? Temporal displacement? Is such a thing even possible?
...Does it matter?
If Optimus is correct - and his instincts are usually quite sound, and he understands Primal mysticism far better than Ratchet could ever hope to - then perhaps this is part of something bigger than either one of them, an act of, if not Primus, then something with enough power to pull a 'Bot back from not just the brink of death but perhaps death itself. Pull them out of the past, maybe. Wasn't this exactly what Ratchet had cursed and bargained Primus for in equal measure? They're in the wrong place, but it's Optimus. He's missed out on more than Ratchet expected, but that, at least, is something that can be remedied.
"...Well, I... we'll... have plenty to catch up on, won't we? It was," he assures him, and this time does step forward to meet Optimus, placing a hand on his arm. "It is. Oh, I wish you could see it, Optimus. All the new life. Bulkhead has taken over construction efforts again! The moment I can build us a spacebridge out of here— but for the moment, however it came to pass, I can't begin to tell you how good it is to see you whole and well again."
OPTIMUS KNEW FULL WELL HOW STRONGLY the idea of his death was opposed. Not only by Ratchet , of course , but he knew of his disdain towards the very idea better than most. It was his job to keep him alive , after all. One that she has been dutifully carrying out since the war had begun. Of course she would be the one to fight his untimely demise until her own final breath , doing anything in her power to keep him alive. It was noble of her , he thought , but still incredibly foolish. Yes , he had enlisted her as his Chief Medical Officer for a reason , but it was not to keep only him alive. There were many other Autobots to be worried about , and while he did heal them ( something she could do better with the makeshift materials she found on Earth than any other medic could with the best tools Cybertron could offer ) , he made no effort in hiding that Optimus was his priority.
THE MENTION OF UNICRON'S RETURN MADE HIM PAUSE. Whatever had happened , whatever he had missed , was far more dire than he could have even imagined. How could have Unicron returned ? What possibly could they have missed for him to return ? ❛ I . . ❜ For once , Optimus is rendered speechless. Though it is a temporary malady , one that he quickly remedies by shaking his head. ❛ As soon as Megatron was struck down , I was brought here. ❜ So much time had passed , and yet . . he had only been here for less than a day before the two had finally met face to face. He does not yet know what could even begin to explain this , but it is far beyond even what he as Prime can comprehend.
PERHAPS IT TRULY IS HIS MEMORY ESCAPING HIM. Even his past , his time as Orion Pax , was fuzzy. No matter how hard he tries , he cannot recall anything past his days serving in the Hall of Records. It is as if something physically stops him - and thinking about it further just fills him with dread. Could he have somehow forgotten ? As much as the very thought of him having forgotten events on Cybertron unsettled him greatly , it is becoming more apparent that it is a possibility. The events very well could have slipped his mind. How , or why , he could not even begin to fathom. ❛ I do not know. It feels as if I never . . ❜ The look on his face is indecipherable , an optic twitching as he tries desperately to maintain his composure.
No , now is not the time. Keep your resolve. Do not falter until Ratchet has left.
WHEN RATCHET CLOSES THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THEM , and the hand meets his arm , Optimus is finally made aware of the tension that had unknowingly spread through his body. Slowly , he relaxes his shoulders , and raises a hand to meet where the medic's rests on his arm. ❛ I suppose we will. ❜ Something to look forward to. For both of them , he reckons. He may not know the extent of what happened , but he will do whatever it takes to put Ratchet's worries at ease. He owes her that much , at least. ❛ I shall take your word for it. ❜ A smile curls onto his lips , faint as it may be , and he sets his other hand on his shoulder. ❛ The feeling is mutual , Ratchet. Though I do know that these circumstances are , perchance , far too familiar for your taste. ❜
She'd spent an unreasonable amount of time in a state of disbelief. Optimus wasn't gone, it was just a matter of waiting for him to return. Megatron didn't just get to walk away, they only had to gather the resources to track down and imprison him. Their new reality was too much to accept, however eagerly she had taken in some aspects - new life coming from the Well. Cybertron's rebuilding.
Optimus remembered neither the good nor the bad. It's a monumental amount to expect anyone to process. For Primus' sake, they were asking him to process his own death. The fact that he seems to, somehow, be absorbing it better than Ratchet has managed to so far is... well, she doesn't want to say frustrating, but very predictably Optimus™ in a way that's sometimes difficult to handle.
[ CMO ] -> Do you truly believe that?
[ CMO ] -> I've been trying to tell myself the same, but I know we could have done more. We should have known Unicron wasn't truly defeated. We should have taken steps to destroy Megatron's body rather than just abandoning it on Earth. If we'd only been a little more prepared for his inevitable return, if we'd taken any amount of time to strategize, perhaps you would still be with us.
THE YEARS THAT OPTIMUS HAD SPENT tirelessly building up his facade of a fearless , unshakable leader had led up to this moment. Under any other circumstances , he would not have allowed himself this freedom ; however , the two were not speaking face to face. He had no reason to steel himself , to hide the soul - crushing dread that filled him with every word Ratchet typed. But it wasn't just her , every other Cybertronian was filled with more disbelief than the last to see him still alive. He knew it was his destiny to join the Allspark. He had made his peace with it. But to be thought dead when he hadn't made that journey yet , it was disorienting. Someone else with his name had made that sacrifice for him , even if he knew he would make the same choice if he was confronted with it.
TEARS SILENTLY STREAM FROM HIS OPTICS , blurring the screen and making the incoming messages nearly impossible to read. He takes in a deep breath , or at least , he tries to. The act has become troublesome , what was once effortless was now taking all of his strength ―― and no matter how hard he gasped he could never take in enough. He doesn't know how long it takes him to properly calm down. But eventually , he's able to force his tears at bay for at least long enough to reply.
[ OptimusPrime ] -> Even if I did not, there is no point dwelling on something we cannot change now.
[ OptimusPrime ] -> Especially when we physically are unable to do anything about the matter. Not once has considering the "what-ifs" helped our cause, and it will not begin to now. All that matters is that our efforts restored Cybertron. The revival of Megatron, however undue we may think it to be, does not matter. And for the matter of my death...

[ DECEPTICON_LEADER ] -> I'M A CHANGED SEEKER, OPTIMUS - I ONLY TAKE THIS TITLE BY DEFAULT RATHER THAN BY ANY PLOY.
[ DECEPTICON_LEADER ] -> I THOUGHT WE WERE ALL AWARE MEGATRON WAS STILL ONLINE? I THINK YOU HAVE THE ORDER OF LIVING AND DEAD CONFUSED.
