Australian live feeding, surprisingly, only seems to affect mammalian prey. No regards for birds or any kind of other animal. Insects are thrown under the bus, as well as likely fish and other things. There's a problem with going by sentience of a being to judge its worth. There are many factors to intelligence, sometimes it comes down to genes, sometimes nurture, sometimes by the fact that evolution drives any such thing to be more intelligent than another. Octopuses, for example, likely feel all those things and can do all those things rats can do, but I don't see you crying over how many go to die by the sushi train, or are suffering due to pollution of their habitats.
No, the only reason you have any care *at all* for this subject is because it hurts your poor little rat friends. But tough news, they're a prey animal, and unless you can evolve something that reproduces just as fast at that size and with such a short turnover rate, then yeah, rats can probably be let go. But they won't. You need to suck it up and accept that no, not everyone will see a rat the way you do, like how I don't expect people to see my snake the way I do. I'm respectful to people and don't flaunt the fact I have this animal or this affinity, I don't call myself a snake or personify them to the degree you do with your rats. All life is equal, but you seem to think some lives are more equal than others. All life is precious, and yet you deem one less worthy because you personally don't understand how it functions.
How much is a whale worth to you? How much is a fellow human being? Would you pull the plug on someone in a coma just because they don't have any sensory experiences? By your logic, you would. Would you put down someone who was blind and deaf? Because they have less experience than others in certain senses, so obviously they're lesser, right?
