Genuinely think the most underrated skill in writing is knowing when a scene is done. not perfect. done. there's a version of every scene that keeps going because you're scared to leave it, scared it wasn't enough, scared the next scene is harder. so you keep adding. one more line. one more beat. one more little moment. and the scene dies from it. it needed to end three paragraphs ago and you just kept talking because you didn't want to face what came next. same as real life actually.

i get so emotional every time i think about fanfic culture. it's just so beautiful that people are writing and anonymously posting these thousand-word stories about characters we all love and not even getting any money or public fame from it. it's literally just for the love of the game.

everyday i mourn that my parents did not make me study five languages during my critical window of language acquisition (2 to 7 years)

Hi! Language teacher here!

If there isn't a fluent speaker around to practice with regularly, it doesn't matter how many languages you make a small child study. They aren't going to speak any of them.

I can also confirm (anecdotally) that my adult students learned much quicker than any of the kids I worked with, and exponentially faster than any of the toddlers I taught.

If you want to learn a language, go learn it! You are fully capable of doing so as an adult, and you didn't miss any windows.

#my parents also tried to get me to learn a foreign language when i was around 7-10 #though i was already bilingual #so it would have been my third language #in hindsight i think it would have been better/easier if they had helped me improve my actual first language #which was becoming less dominant due to english #but anyway they basically bought me language-learning computer games and probably hoped that I would pick something up #and i just... could not #then lo and behold i decide to learn German as a teenager because i was interested in it #now i'm very comfortable with the language and can use it daily #it's not easy #but if you have a genuine passion and dedication you can do it
