I know I don't even post about him bc I'm so fixated on Bell, but no one ever talks about how devastating Cold War is from Sim's perspective
POV You're Larry: Your best friend is Russell Adler, and you have known him since at least the Vietnam War. Given that you are both CIA agents who are assigned a pretty top-tier mission, you've most likely known each other long before that. You see absolute hell with this man, you know exactly how he got that scar, you two are absolutely inseparable by the trauma you share together from that shitshow of a "war". You continue to be his ride or die for the next thirteen years.
One day, he comes up to you after a standard kill or capture mission and tells you that he's going to use MK-Ultra to brainwash a person he wholeheartedly believes is the key to finally capturing Perseus. You have been hearing nothing but his obsession over Persus for a decade; it drives you insane. You want him to let go of this guy, whom you are struggling to think even exists at this point. But he's so certain, so fucking sure that this is finally it, and the relief of it all is so tantalizing that you tell him you're with him.
You think he's just gonna rip the truth out of this scumbag, but no, he makes a walking almagamation of your trauma. This shambling mound that's barely a person anymore keeps regurgitating facts about your own life like they were there themselves. Nearly pushing themselves to tears as they recall the smell of burning corpses and the way the taste of napalm still wasn't out of thier mouth. It pissess you off so much that you almost blow it all wanting to scream at this monster. But you can't, it's not like they were willingly committing stolen valor, so you have to bite your tongue and wait for it all to pass over.
By the end, you see Adler get nasty, not like he hasn't done anything like this before. But it's his mental state as he's trying to pull the truth out of Bell like a stubborn tooth. It's dangerous, pure madness. Pushing the soviet to overdose as he only gets angier and angier, Bell is physically unable to say anything coherent as they near a damn heart attack. Only satisfied when they finally choke out an answer and are gently lulled into another false sense of security until he trashes them like nothing. In the end, you can't even say anything to him because once again, he was right.
And then we got Bo6 on top of that. We know Sims had to distance himself from Adler. Sims says it's because of his reckless behavior, but I think the Bell situation was another big driver. That pushed a boundary between the two of them because it was personally violating to him. He still cares for Adler a lot, though; he still gives in when he needs help. Still follows him into insane battles where they don't have any right to survive, outnumbered and outgunned. But the boundary he makes is extremly firm. You can see Adler have a moment to actually think if going ahead with the mission was worth losing his best friend over. People make jokes about the scene, but that's probably why he was making sure enemies were dead while navigating the airport; he wasn't going to take the chance of losing him, even if it gave another reason for Sims to hate him.

Another Adler rambling. I don't think it's common knowledge how much influence his voice actor, Bruce Thomas, had on him.
The devs have gone on record saying the whole reason Adler and Woods get along so well in Bo6 is that Bruce Thomas and Damien Victor Allen became irl bffs after working on Cold War together. So when they came back to the studio to do Bo6, they were naturally very buddy-buddy and comfortable with one another, so they wrote it into the characterization.
Bonus: They keep showing up to stream events sharing the same setup and wearing matching hats, and even have a podcast together called the CoDFathers podcast, where they interview other voice actors! I really recommend it! They genuinely really love thier castmates and talking about thier work experiences
CoDFathers is genuinely amazing and the only podcast I actually listen to. Iβve listened to the episode with Lily Cowles sooo many times. I love how much they love their work π
