The devs have gone on record saying the whole reason Adler and Woods get along so well in Bo6 is that Bruce Thomas and Damien Victor Allen became irl bffs after working on Cold War together. So when they came back to the studio to do Bo6, they were naturally very buddy-buddy and comfortable with one another, so they wrote it into the characterization.

An admirable disdain for Frank Woods. He threw up on Woods the last time the man dared to pick him up and remain unapologetic about the experience. Russell would've laughed more if he weren't the one in charge of doing the spaghetti vomit-covered laundry.

His mannerisms seem to be absorbed into the kid's behaviour. Demanding a cup of apple juice and sipping it like a glass of whisky, Russell is glad he hasn't yet picked up the habit of knocking the glass back when it's half empty. Pretending to smoke crayons, though he's in the habit of gnawing their ends, then huffing at the taste of wax. Dramatically running his hand through his hair when he's deep in thought, only to reveal the issue that so greatly troubles him is "the big fish."
