While planning for Istanbul’s European Capital of Culture 2010 celebrations was focusing on the historic city center, “Cultural Agencies” broke out of this “cultural bubble” and shifted focus on narratives of Istanbulites inhabiting the largely ignored periphery.

In October 2016, annual conference of Center for Metropolitan Studies (CMS) will take place in Berlin. The conference is organized by the Internationalen Graduiertenkollegs Berlin-New York-Toronto (IGK) focusing on the theme: UrbanTOPIAS - Discussing the Challenges of Changing Cities. The panel examines the complex meaning and practice of Urban Hospitality and Hostility. Duygu Kaban is invited to give a speech about Spacedigger’s practice.

Anxious Borders

In May 2015, Spacedigger was accepted to take part in TANDEM’s EU-Turkey connections initiative. Together with their Turkish partner organization Carbon Collective, their project Anxious Borders - futURban was chosen as one of 10 projects to be funded for a year of cultural collaboration.

The project has examined different neighborhoods. The results have been shared online (anxiousborders.org), as well as on the following exhibitions:

Mapping Future Archeologies Catalouge

In April 2015, Spacedigger facilitated a workshop called Mapping Future Archaeologies at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul. Students were trained to investigate the world of today, from the perspective of future archaeologists, learning about the present day through the investigation of material culture, and using these sources to map social realities of the present (imagined past). The workshop comprised training in conceptual mapping and infographics, as well as intensive ethnographic field research in Aksaray, Istanbul.
