Bulgarian Mythology Moodboard: Karakondzhul

A Karakondzhul (караконджул) is an undead being in Bulgarian and Balkan mythology, traditionally believed to walk the Earth every year between Christmas and Epiphany, on the so-called Unclean Days. Accounts of its appearance vary: it can be covered in dark fur, with horns and hooves, or a one-legged, winged cyclops, or a half-man, half-horse, similar to a centaur. Karakondzhuli are shapeshifters and can take the form of various animals.

It is thought that people born during the Unclean Days turn into Karakondzhuli when they die. They inhabit wooded areas, particularly where ivy grows, caves and abandoned water mills, and come out only at night. Karakondzhuli are malevolent and will kill any person they come across, either by drowning them, throwing them off a cliff or crushing them with millstones. If they decide not to kill the person, however, they will climb onto their back and make their victim carry them throughout the night, finally disappearing at dawnbreak.
