Light from Shadows Whiskey Cabinet
This idea came about when I was walking under some trees and the shadows cast by the tree branches on the ground inspired the pattern on the front of the cabinet. As with the shadows, the light pattern on the front of the door is not always cast. Only when you shut the door does the light come on, casting its light through the thin film of veneer at the front of the cabinet. The piece has been made from solid Tasmanian Eucalyptus, chosen for its durability as well as beauty
This interactive lighting idea can be utilised in other sized cabinets. Similar cabinet designs can also be made to order with no lighting.

Spiral 180 Pendant Lights
PROPELLER PENDANT LIGHTS A mix of hand-driven and computer-aided machines have been used in the construction of these lights – designed and produced in Tasmania. The 8 powder-coated aluminium blades slot into a custom central bracket and are held in place with small grub screws. The bracket then fixes into a turned Tasmanian Blackwood nose cone cover cap. The pendants can be assembled in about 10 minutes (search: Duncan Meerding Design on Youtube for an instructional video).
Meshing organic and industrial shapes, the Propeller Pendant and Propeller Droop Pendant lights cast dramatic shadows through an 8-bladed form. The light’s assembly also makes possible a user-friendly flat-pack system, reducing freight and environmental costs.
Cracked log pendant lamps.
New Propeller and Propeller Droop Pendant Lights.  Made from Powder Coated Aluminum with a Turned Tasmanian Blackwood cover cap. This design flat-packs for ease in shipping, reducing freight costs, economically and environmentally. Will be developing a wooden version soon. Thanks to a number of my colleagues who helped workshop how to get this Design from idea into reality.

Feeling a bit spiraled out of control. Just been in Sydney for great times with the Creative Robotics Lab, UNSW, discussing different interactive switching systems for some light ideas. Back in Tasmania for a week to get ready before heading back up via sea and land to Sydney for Nest 14 as part of the DesignEx trade show. Spirals 180 Pendnat light pictured. Shadows in the Light Whiskey Cabinet as shown at my 'From the Side' exhibition. Inspired by shadow cast by branches when walking underneath trees. When open, you don't see the light. When closed, look what appears. Things are not always what the seem. (at duncanmeerding.com.au)
