LETS PLAY THE 'YES' OR 'NO' GAME: Ask me questions and I'm only allowed to answer with 'Yes' or 'No'
andie.
Looking up at the man, Andie shook her head. âNo, I wasnât really looking for anybody I canât find myself. Thank you, though.â She looked at him for a long moment before she gestured to him. âYouâre related to Logan, right?â The woman asked, no context for her question. This was changed immediately. âI know you probably get that all the time. I work with him at the police station, thatâs why I ask.â
A brow raised, his expression remaining relaxed though. âItâs what Iâve been told,â Duke replies, though no smile graces his features. â---why do you ask?â He folded his arms across his chest, not in a defensive position, but more just out of habit. âI am gonna guess it wasnât the family resemblance.â
cee.
âKels?â Cordelia asked softly trying to sort through her memories and the people Richie mentioned or that stopped into her work. âNo. I havenât met her yet. I like the feel of her place though. Not as much as the Record shopâŚÂ Does she know youâre married?â Cee tried to watch him like a hawk. Tried to see if in this town a best friend was capable of being a best friend, or was he in love with this Kels? What had she ran away to? âWe should.. talk. Not around people. But we may need a crowd in a distance, or else I might just start screaming all the illicit Italian words I learned from my Nonnaâ
Jealously. It was both bright and transparent on her features, and Duke had to stifle a laugh. It seemed no matter the time, or their age, all women carried the same traits. âSheâs my best friend, of course, she does.â He replies, his tone remaining even. There werenât many things they didnât share, and this sort of secret was one of them. âLook, Delia---youâre right and we should.â Pause. âBut right now, this is Kelseyâs thing and I gotta be here for it. What about tonight, the lighthouse?â

My wife just got to town. Wife. Wife. The word kept replaying in her head over and over again. It all felt like a wild dream, but it wasnât. This was real, very real. Duke had a wife. No, not a girlfriend. No, not a fiancĂŠ. Duke had a wife. There were so many questions running through her mind, as she paced back and forth in her kitchen. Her breathing increased in speed, as she tried to calm down. Her heart felt as if it was going to pound out of her chest. Downing what was left in the bottle of tequila in her cabinet, she threw the bottle away so there would be no evidence. The brunette gripped the counter in front of her, trying to ease the shake in her hands, but nothing was working. Wife. He had a wife.
The knock on the door startled her. Shaking her hands out she took a few deep breaths before heading towards it. Last time he was here he was telling her he was always in love with her, now he was here to talk about his wife. Slowly opening the door, she did her best to hide all and any shock, hurt, and confusion from her face. âHi.â Her voice peeped out. Kiernan head back inside, sitting on the couch, tucking her feet under herself. âSo, your wifeâs in town, thatâsâŚfun.â Way to play it cool, Kiernan. Way to pay it cool.Â
It seemed no matter how far he ran, how hard he worked to distance himself from the troubles brewing about in his life, they always somehow found him. In one form or another, they kept emerging and drowning him. So it came as no surprise that he leaned on the bottle, fingers gripping ruthlessly at its neck as he trudged through the snow, shoes crunching against frozen floors. But not even the promise of hard liquor could save him now, as Kiernan opened the door, and he tumbled in still dragging some of the ice. âYeah, wife.â He repeats as if the two hadnât heard the word enough in the last hour.Â
âYou have any liquor, I uh brought some to share---but...â Holding the bottle high, he showcased its half empty contents. âDidnât work out so well, I guess.â Like most things it seemed as he ran a hand down his face, fingers scratching at stubble as he turned towards the woman. âI have a wife, and Iâm here looking at you, again.â Just as he had for years, it seemed, always returning to her doorstep with one excuse or another. âWe said goodbye, Anna, what am I doing here?â He was defeated, facing his lowest points and now he stood in front of Kiernan, questioning what he was supposed to do next. âIt was Vegas, we were drunk and she lied about her age.â It was crazy, everything was just absurd so he said the very words he had been thinking all along.Â
âIt shouldâve been you, but I asked you and you told me no.â
cee.
All the while between avoiding Duke and trying to fill her stomach with pastries. She had almost patted herself on the back, that is until she was bumped into by a stranger. him. âItâs oh-.â Cordelia paused not even finishing the word. It wasnât okay. They werenât okay. âOpen mic night, huh?â
âYeah, Kels really loves keepinâ the traditions alive.â He comments, lips pressing into a line. Awkward, definitely awkward. âYou meet her yet, sheâs my best friend but she also owns this lil place.â Also made a mean latte, but that didnât really matter in their current conversation.
andie.
Brushing her hair behind her ear, Andie ducked into the cafe quietly behind a few other people. She was forcing herself to be social on this evening, as much as she wanted to curl up at home and have a drink. As if karma was hitting her right in the face, she walked right into a fellow patron, raising her eyebrows. âOh hey, sorry. Didnât watch where I was going.â She added, giving Duke a friendly smile.
With his hands raised, Duke caught the woman from colliding with him too hard. She was a tiny thing, and if they hadnât been careful, she couldâve taken a serious tumble. âNo worries, crowed in here.â He offers, gesturing to their surroundings. âLucky we didnât both end up fallinâ over, drinks and all.â Dropping his hands, he spoke again. âYou need help findinâ someone?âÂ
âDonât work here, just helpinâ a friend out,â Duke responds to a customer, as he turns, bumping into another. â---excuse me, oh, hey.â

anna.
It was used to be the devil in disguise, bright smiles and gentle eyes to hide her true intentions. She could be a deadly threat. But at that moment, clutching her purse close to her side while her fingers nervously pulled at the blonde waves falling over her shoulder, she really was as innocent as she seemed. âI really am sorry,â She chewed on her lower lip as she apologised again, hoping that Duke was as nice as he appeared - maybe a little rough around the edges, but nice. This was quiet Bayfield, surely she hadnât walked right into the traps of a dangerous man just trying to find her way back to Cathedral Heights. She gave him a grateful smile at his offer, preparing to turn it down before the storm was mentioned. âAnother one?â She questioned, although perhaps she had simply ignored it on the news thinking they had been referring to the blizzard that had just passed through. âIs there any time that the weather is just chill here?â She asked, nervous laughter running through her words as though she really was expecting to spend half her time in lockdown. âOh Anna, Anna Banks,â She said quickly, only realising at his words she hadnât introduced himself, as she stuck her hand out in a habit of formality.
âSummertime, but then really weâre just dealing with the humidity and wave patterns.â He answers her, though he was sure she wasnât really looking for an answer. Most people asked questions without hope or expectation of an actual response, Duke just didnât know how to take people less earnestly. âNice to meet you, Anna Banks, now let's get you inside.â Leading the way towards his boat, he approached the dock which he jumped down upon, turning to help Anna as he raised a hand to the woman. âAre you a tea or coffee woman? I have a bit of both, but I canât promise any whole lot of options as far as creamers go---I never quite grasped the understanding of needing eight different flavors when it has always tasted just fine on its own to me.â
helena.
âTo become a teacher.â Helena replied, for awhile she wasnât sure what she wanted to study, always a little indecisive when it came to figuring out a plan until she realized how much she enjoyed teaching children. âElementary teacher to be exact.âÂ
Glancing her over, Duke nodded. âYou look the part.â Which was a compliment as he moved to sit across from the woman, eyes drifting about her work before settling back on the woman. âIâm Duke, itâs nice to meet you---â

venus.
âI was taking a walk and just needed to clear my head.â Venus responded, shoving her hands into her hoodie pockets, âI wasnât really paying attention on where my feet was taking me and justâŚdazed out. Didnât realize how far I walked.âÂ
âPretty far walk, Venus,â Duke comments, but he didnât question the woman further. It seemed almost everyone in Bayfield had a lot on their mind as of recently. â---wanna talk about it?â
kelsey.
As she approached, it was clear Duke wasnât quite ready to leave at all, but Kelsey didnât mind in the slightest as she settled next to him. One drink wouldnât hurt and if they both ended up drunk to bits, they could always grab an Uber. Or call Kiernan or Theo. Even as tumultuous as things were between that trio, Kels knew the two girls would be there for them in an instant. âThat guyâ Trevor. He was nice.â A scrunch of her nose gave away her true feelings. He was boring. Boring was okay though. Boring was safe and given recent events, safety was something to valued, wasnât it? Nevertheless, she was thankful for her best friendâs interruption.
âBut, weâre not here to talk about me.â The bartender settled the drinks before them and Kelsey gave a polite nod, pulling a few singles out of her purse and tipping the man. âIâve decided weâre here to drink and forget all of our problems. Deal?âÂ
Ah yes, the boring man. Duke had a story or three about those guys from Kelsey, and though they seemed decent enough, they never appeared good enough for his best friend. Especially when her features hardly lit up at their mention, and she merely swept talk about them under a rug. Yeah, Kelsey deserved better than that---much better. âWell then maybe it was a good thing I called, saved you from one less boring man.â Reaching out, he patted her shoulder before returning his attention to his drink. At least liquor was never dull.Â
âForgetting is something I do almost as well as ignoring.â He agrees, lifting his glass in cheers against her own. âTo bad decisions that we can regret tomorrow, or just hopefully not remember at all.â
