Zombie apocalypses would most likely start due to someone not vaccinating their kid
Or that one parent that insists “it’s just allergies” when their kid has a fever of 103, hives, and a running nose that looks more like Niagara Falls.

The level of satisfaction of getting a popcorn kernel out of you molar is never appreciated although we have all experienced it.
You can’t think yourself out of a writing block; you have to write yourself out of a thinking block.
John Rogers (via writingquotes)
Yes, but the writing, ugh the impossible writing.
Why, oh why, is Famous Footwear using Auld Lang Syne to sell back to school? Like, I get it, “it’s a new year” but that song will only ever make people think of New Year’s Eve so using it to sell shoes really feels like a miss.
But then again, I’m talking about the commercial and I got the point of what they were trying to achieve so what the hell do I know?
Lost Things
Yesterday I read the novella Lost Things by John Rector. It was the Kindle Daily Deal awhile back so based on the reviews (award-winning, everyone loves it, etc. etc.) I picked it up.
Gotta say, I wasn’t impressed. But at the same time, I haven’t stopped thinking about it since I finished reading it. The story is fine, 2 college buddies get in over their heads, one wants to back out, the other loses his mind, torture, pain, revenge, the end. But it felt like it was missing...well, everything. I get that it was a novella and therefore short on content. But the whole thing felt crazy rushed. One the hand, there was no real character development but on the other, I still felt that I got an idea of who the characters were. And the ending? It felt like it was tacked on. In a lot of ways, it felt like just reading an outline of a story. As if the main plot points got published before the author could flesh them out. I can’t tell if I’m bothered by this story because I wanted more or because I just don’t get the point of a novella. I’ve read short stories before and they all felt more complete than this one did. Maybe I should read more by John Rector before I offer up any opinions but after this first reading I’m not sure that I want to.

Spoiler Alert: Maybe don’t include the spoiler DIRECTLY AFTER the words “spoiler alert.” Give people a chance dammit.

Fundamental law of summer weather
After being sunny all morning, it will begin raining within 2 minutes of your arrival at the pool. You will try to “wait it out” only to realize that no, this is some Noah’s Ark level rainstorm. After packing up and heading home through said downpour the rain will transition into some sort of rain/sun combination. 17 minutes after the first drops fall, the sky will be clear, the sun will be shining and you will be changed back into real clothes. You will then be left with the annoying decision of “do I stay or do I go?” knowing full well that if you stay at home it will remain sunny and if you leave it will immediately begin raining again.
People always think if you want to hang out you have to DO something. Like… No.. Invite me over to your house, introduce me to your pets, give me a plate of Oreos and your wi-fi password. We can sit together in silence for HOURS.

source: Advice to writers
It is the function of art to renew our perception. What we are familiar with we cease to see. The writer shakes up the familiar scene, and, as if by magic, we see a new meaning in it.
