tips for (testosterone) injections for ppl who are afraid of needles/self injections/blood
- put on your favourite band/album, just listen to it for a bit
- watch videos of other people doing injections, it helps to see someone else normalize it
- draw with a different needle, the sharper your injection needle the quicker (and painlessly) it will enter your epidermal layer. its mostly your epidermal layer thats tough to break on a duller needle.
- poke the drawing needle slightly onto your skin a few times to get a handle for it, you may bleed in little pinpricks from breaking the super superficial veins but its sort of like getting yourself warmed up to the idea
- dont look at the needle while youre injecting it into the skin, that immediately makes you feel nervous and figity
- get in a position thatās comfortable. maybe youāll shake if your leg is up on the chair as opposed to sitting down, but if youre the most comfortable its better.
- theres no need to rush. set a time where you can take a few minutes to a few hours to prepare yourself. if that means you need to do it at 3am the next day, do it at 3am the next day.
- focus on the methodical patterns of sanitizing and drawing the injection fluid. human brains love routine, set a standard routine for yourself
- get someone who knows youre on T to chill w you if possible for the first few rounds.
- be somewhere comfy. injecting in ur moms friends bathroom is a lot harder than ur bedroom.
- think about the benefits of the injection (ex. growing a moustache)
- once its in go slow. theres no rush, and IM injections are usually viscose and need time to expand the muscle (to stop the bruised feeling)
- the less you shake the less likely you are to cause tissue damage in the muscle (which makes the bruised feeling as well) so maybe dont do it mid panic attack
- if you cant self inject, go over it with a family member or friend who isnt afraid of needles. needles arent actually very hard to navigate after a few minutes of research.
- its not easy to fuck up and IM needle. dont fret
Tw: needles!!!

Some T shot tips I learned that have helped immensely even though Iām like horribly afraid of needles!!!
Use ice!! I find I have a lot of anxiety both about feeling the needle and about finding a spot to inject the testosterone. It helps me to find the right area and then put ice there before because it both numbs the spot and makes a giant red mark on the skin where itās numb so you know itās in the right spot.
Listen to music that calms you down-especially if thatās not your average music. I was using random anti anxiety music I found online for like almost a year and it didnāt affect me because I am not calmed down by slow music. Do you regularly listen to fast music? Listen to fast music during this. Use whatever your favorite stuff is if it really helps, doesnāt have to be music. At worst it wonāt calm you down and at best it makes the process a lot easier, so itās worth trying out.
Eat and shower before! Showering makes any anxiety about like germs and stuff go way down, and it also relaxes your muscles before hand really well so itās easier to calm down. Eating before hand helps keep the shakes away for me since itās usually early in the morning.
Make a T-bag to go! I found a like bathroom go bag that hangs and I store everything all organized in the little compartments for toothbrushes and stuff. Those work super well because of the shape of syringes. I have the anti bacterial wipes and bandaids in the same pouch, the needles used for drawing up T in their own pouch, and the syringes and T in the same pouch. It makes it really easy to just keep track of all your stuff on your T days when you have one bag to grab and itās visible how low you are on certain parts.
If you canāt do it yourself, I find the doctor who prescribed your T can usually help do it for you as long as you need, but that depends on your doctor and not much else. Find somebody you know whoās a nurse or whoās had to self inject medicine before. Even just a willing friend or family member can help if youāre too afraid and donāt have any other resources.
I make a year on Testosterone this October so I feel like I have some of this down and I really donāt think I knew some of this stuff until KBdjahdjs a bit late. Iām somebody whoās afraid of needles, but with all these combined things Iāve managed to cut my psyching myself up time down to two minutes. Go easy on yourself. Tailor your prep to your personality. Schedule time out for your week day you choose if you need more! Iām not a doctor so take anything I say with a grain of salt but this is just what Iāve experienced from my T shots.
Sincerely, a trans guy whoās afraid of needles and vibing
hot tip for people who need to inject things: hold a piece of ice in your fingers for a bit until they're cold as hell, and use those fingers to pinch the skin around the area you're injecting
you moreso feel the cold than the injection itself

Iām considering going on T. Which way of taking T has been most effective for the mods? I know that different ways are better for different people but I want to hear peoples experiences before I decide to go on it
Lee says:
The most effective method of T really depends on the person.Ā Maybe your lifestyle is different than mine and you want to do your T once and forget about it for a few months while you go camping; maybe you want to do it daily to minimize hormone fluctuations which can be an issue for some people with certain mental illnesses.Ā
In general, Iād recommend considering the likelihood that youāll be able to actually be compliant with your HRT treatment with each method knowing yourself and your abilities and so on, consider the practicality, and consider the cost.Ā
1: What method are you able to use?
If you decide to do injections but you have a needle phobia and you avoid doing your shot and go for months without doing it because youāre too anxious, then injections are not going to be the most effective method for you and you should try gel
If you decide to do gel, but youāre not able to consistently apply it every day because you forget or youāre too busy, and you end up only putting it on once or twice a week when you remember, then gel (which requires a daily application) isnāt the best option for you and you should try injectionsĀ
If you want to do injections but you have motor control issues or other disabilities that mean you canāt hold a syringe and inject yourself safely, and you donāt have reliable access to a caregiver who can do it for you or donāt want to be reliant on someone else, then maybe injections arenāt the best option for you and you should try implantable testosterone pellets
2: What method is best for your particular body?
If you use patches and develop an allergic reaction at the application site, maybe patches arenāt the best option for you and you should switch to gel or injections
If youāre using gel and you donāt experience enough changes and have low T levels, maybe switching to injections is better for you
If youāre on injections and find that having high testosterone levels at the start of the week and low levels at the end of the week/injectable cycle causes mood swings/exacerbates your mental illness/cause PMS-like symptoms from fluctuating hormones, then maybe injections isnāt the best option and switching to gel is better for you. With gel youāll have more stable T levels that mimic cis menās levels, and thereāll be a slight high in the morning when you put on the gel and a slight dip at night but overall fewer big swings.
3: What method is most affordable with your insurance?
If your insurance doesnāt cover testosterone gel and you appeal and they agree to cover it but the generic still has a $300/month copay for you, then maybe that is not affordable for your situation and you might end up not being able to pick up your prescription every month because you run out of money and canāt pay for it, so you should do the cheaper injections and pay like $15 per month instead
If you want to have pellets placed, but travelling to the doctorās office for appointments every 3 months is prohibitively expensive because you canāt afford appointments that often or the office is too far away for you to easily get to without paying a million dollars in uber fares, then maybe pellets arenāt the best option for you
If you want to do injections but want to use an autoinjector instead of your typical syringe and your insurance wonāt cover an autoinjector, then maybe you should consider using a typical syringe or switch to another form of T
If you want a longer-lasting injectable form of T that only requires injections every 6 weeks instead of every other week but your insurance doesnāt cover that form, then decide if itās worth it, etc
I might say that the form of testosterone that was most effective for me personally is weekly subQ injections because I was depressed when I started T and didnāt shower often enough so the gel built up in a gross layer on my skin and didnāt absorb, but if you know that youāre someone who could never stab yourself with a needle on a weekly basis then daily gel is going to be better for you than missing two out of three or four injections every month.Ā
And you donāt necessarily need to stick with the form of T that you start with. Say you start with gel and find it isnāt effective for you. Then you can talk with your testosterone prescriber and raise the dose! If the higher dose works, then great! If it doesnāt work, talk with your testosterone prescriber and switch to shots, or patches, or whatever else you want to try!Ā
It can be a bit of a trial-and-error process to find the right for of medication for you, and itās pretty typical to switch forms of T at some point on your T journey. So you arenāt necessarily permanently locked into using the form that you started on forever.Ā
There are different pros and cons for each type of T, so thereās no oneĀ ābestā and most effective way to be on T. How effective it is depends on your bodyās reaction and you canāt predict that in advance, you have to find it out as you go along and experiment.Ā
So all things aside, if every form were equally accessible in price and availability and practicality, there still wouldnāt be a universal ābestā and most effective option because different people have different bodies.
That being said, most people tend to have good results with injections after finding the right dose so itās a good place to start if you are comfortable with needlesā but some folks are allergic to the carrier oil and need to switch from cypionate to enanthate for example, and there is more than one type of injectable testosterone and more than one way to inject it (intramuscular vs subcutaneous, and even if you choose one type of injection like SubQ there different sites like thigh vs stomach) so even saying ādo shots!ā leaves you with a lot of choices too, and none are clearly superior, just different.
The various options for testosterone are listed in ourĀ Testosterone FAQ, and as always, talk to your healthcare providers about what they recommend for you!
This is my cleanest version, probably my last version of it for now.
