I do not belong here. Daeneryn could think nothing else. He never imagined he would think such a thing on his own wedding day. How very wrong and foolish he had been. He knew that Viserys would have sold him to anyone necessary to secure the Iron Throne and his precious golden crown.
âWould you not pay any price to go home, little brother?â Viserysâs violet eyes would gleam in that frightening way they only shone when talking of Westeros or the Iron Throne or the Usurper. The lovely, legendary Targaryen orbs glowed with an animalistic hunger in Viserysâs head.
âYes,â Dany would always answer quietly and meekly. Dutifully. Submissively. But he wanted the only home he knew: the house with the red door and fruit trees. He didnât remember Westeros or their family. Viserys and his words were all Dany knew of home. Does that make it my home, or do I not really have one? As he looked around at the Dothraki hoard celebrating his marriage to their Khaleesi, he decided the latter was correct. But he would say nothing about that to Viserys. Or his bride.
Quietly, Dany snuck a sideways glance at Amari. She was much bigger than him. She was beautiful, but in a completely savage way. She was as hard and unfamiliar as the rest of Danyâs new world. The high grass would swallow him whole, the horses would trample him into the dust, the people would overwhelm him, and his wife would crush his body. He was weak and pale and frail, nothing like the hardened woman beside him. She was not looking at him, and that did not surprise Dany.
I must be a dreadful disappointment. The Dothraki valued the strong in the world, especially in their leaders. He would never be the leader of the hoard, since he was a foreigner simply married to their Khaleesi, but he was still their Khal. He saw the disapproving glances of the men and heard the whispers of the women. He knew what they saw when they looked at the silver-haired boy seated stiffly beside their esteemed Khaleesi, and he knew that they loved him little, if any at all.
That would never suit Viserys. He wanted Dany to sway Amari to his cause even more, to speed her assistance and her armies. He would never accomplish such a goal if she hated him. So even though his hands shook and his soft voice wavered, at one pointed look from Viserys, Dany turned fully towards his wife and spoke for the first time since the ceremony.
âDoââ He cleared his throat and spoke stronger and louder. The music, the laughter, and the shouting were difficult to speak over. âDo you know the Common Tongue?â Dany realized that his words would be useless if her answer was no, but he had to say something.
