I’m rewatching Downton Abbey and I am just as astonished as ever by the time and energy they waste on Mr Bates. Seriously, who the F U C K cares about Bates?

Yep, I do as well but worry not once S3 is out the way Fellowes doesn’t seem to give that much of a toss until he needs someone who can actually act to do a few scenes so your discontent should be kept to a minimal.

Bates! BATES!!!!! Yeah, it’s like ‘hold on brendan I will call you when I need a real actor for some really good scenes. meanwhile you rest your skills and I will waste some time with some meh peeps.’ That’s why Banna scenes are few but SO GOOD, the best actually. Better less and quality than plenty and boring.

It is also why Bates sat in a rocking chair drinking a cup of tea whilst perusing the daily papers is a scene stealer when really we are meant to give a bag of fucks about whatever petty shite Daisy or Thomas or whining about per episode.

Worrrrd. How people can say there’s too much Bates when there was only 38 minutes of him in series 5 is beyond me.

38 minutes which resulted in almost everyone else around him (even the hair department) winning awards whilst Coyle himself sat at home watching the red carpet in his pants (okay I’m just guessing at that bit).

There is a reason the opening scene is Bates arriving on the milk train… best character, best actor and best hair that show or any other he gives his time and talent to will ever know.

I think we can safely say people care about Bates.

Well 3 of us and I’m pretty sure my nan knows which one he is…

After all Bates is just one of the original and MORE POPULAR characters (even the Free Bates campaign got major international attention) and fans on other Downton fan sites also say he is one of the most romantic characters! Just cause dweebie doesn’t like Bates simply means dweebie is in the minority in Downton fandom. Also, some don’t like Bates simply because they like Thomas and he does not like Bates or because they resent or feel convicted by the portrayal of a loyal, kind, honest, loving man with integrity. Bates has many layers and he has made many positive changes in his life. If anything Bates does not get the screen time his character and the superb acting of the Emmy nominated actor, Brendan Coyle, and MOST Downton Abbey fans deserve. He has a couple of episodes where he has some important and powerful scenes in series 4 and 5, but no one should be able to rightly complain that he gets too much attention because he was basically made a background character in the last two series. This series, so far, he only had around 30 seconds of screen time in S6E3 and only a couple of very brief scenes in S6E2!

Well, I care about Bates. Quite a lot. His lack of scenes in S6 is a travesty, as it was in S5. The character has been squandered and as a fanfic writer, I truly have no idea what is going on in Fellowes’ head not to give him the biggest, meatiest storylines available.
