Since it's Holy Week again, good timing for yet another reminder that most of the people who were persecuted by the Catholic Church throughout history were Jews, Muslims, and Christian people of color.

Hot take but you can’t learn about paganism without also learning about white supremacy and how it uses pagan religions to push hate group agendas all over the world today. If you don’t learn about the connections between the two and how it operates, your ignorance enables white supremacists to keep on doing it and using it to recruit others. People in our community who do nothing and stay silent are literally a part of the problem, there is no opting out whatsoever. Divorcing the two makes the issue repeat itself over and over and over again.
It’s not hard to include this in your research and stay aware. It’s the bare minimum.
Happy winter solstice! The light begins to return tomorrow!!

Fantasy Is A Metaphor For The Human Condition, a comic about magic, and art, and speculative fiction, and being sick, and how they all intersect. Originally laid out/pencilled November-December 2017, when I was in a very difficult place emotionally as I was relearning how to draw post-brain injury.

I’m crying
Maybe it's just me, but I always feel like advice for beginners is better when it's "This is what you should look into" moreso than "this is what you shouldn't look into."
This is actually a thing that was taught to me in technical communications.
Limit your negative language if you want people to learn. Even if you want to warn about something, figure out how to phrase it in positive language.
Take, for example... idk... "Don't read Crowley." Sure, okay, he's an ass (to undersell it), and we need a whole heap of salt before digging into his stuff, so until someone learns the tools for how to season his stuff properly... this isn't terrible advice?
But it's pretty unhelpful because there are still 500000 other witchy authors of varying degrees of trustworthiness (which is a subjective metric dependent on what baggage you're bringing to your witchcraft journey).
So it's more helpful to say, "Read @breelandwalker's Grovedaughter Witchery if you're looking for a practical guide to get started without the theology."
This. Exactly this.
Hey witchy people please explain something to me. This girl I'm talking to rn just said "I want to perform a blood ritual next week but I would need a bit of your hair" and she said "it will let us reincarnate a little closer in our next life" WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT MEAN IS THAT A REAL SPELL I don't want her to do it but I also don't want her to like. Hex me or something. What the fuck do I do I'm so serious somebody help me
Do not give her a fucking thing.
Tell her you just don't feel comfortable doing so and please see this for the red flag that it is. Ghost her if necessary.
Put some protections around yourself and your home. Set them to reflect harm sent your way and repel unwanted visitors. Don't let her back in.
I am terrified of this person, but not even remotely for witchcraft reasons.
Tell her "im not comfortable with people having parts of me".
For this, especially this early in a relationship, it is a warning sign of obsessive behavior and she will likely turn out to be possessive, manipulative, and generally toxic.
My witchy advice is to never give someone a part of yourself such as your blood, teeth, or hair. I know some people who use those in spells that arent necessarily harmful, but as a general rule i dont give of me. Once given, it is really hard to take back
Thank you witch side of tumblr for your help and advice.
Follow up question: How do I "put protections up" on me and my house, what do I do for that. I'll direct this question towards @breelandwalker because they brought to my attention first, but anyone can answer
So this can depend some on your specific beliefs, as some things are culturally specific. Some practices are closed, and only shared within a culture.
I am most informed on practices derived western european immigrants in america. As a white person in the Midwest, whose ancestors mostly come from Northwestern Europe (France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Ireland, Scotland, and England), I can only speak on practices derived from those cultural experiences and beliefs.
One thing I know of can be creating a spell jar, or cleansing the space you use. In my practice, I make spell jars for home and for travel. I usually use a recycled glass jar that I add different herbs into. Before using the jar, i clean it and then i may light a candle and use that smoke to purify the jar, or add energy to it.
Then I add different herbs based on their meanings, both magical and personal. I have made them to look nice on a shelf with added coffee grounds for energy, and I can recharge that energy by putting it in the sun, or outside during a correlating moon phase. The jars Ive made for banishing ill will or negative energy are what I call 'shit shaker' jars. I put herbs, and crystals in them, then I walk through a space shaking it and making noise.
Meaning can be added in a variety of ways, as long as it is done intentionally. Walking clockwise can mean inviting something in, and counterclockwise can push something out. Waning moons can mean dispersal of something or releasing it, and waxing moons can mean adding something or growth. Rain can be cleansing or nourishing.
For my Norse practices, I use runes and symbolism of my gods. Some runes mean protection. Some witches also create their own sigils using a variety of methods. These sigils can be used as wards.
You can put iron by the door as a ward.
I also imbue protection and warding in my cleaning. I will make a mixture of herbs such as peppermint and cinnamon, sometimes with cedar shavings, that I steep in warm water. I will use the water to clean my doors and windowsills. This also helps prevent different bugs as they ward them off.

Friendly reminder that you are not obligated to worship the Gods as they were traditionally worshipped. Incorporating modern practices of ancient religions is just as valid. Remember that you can create a regime that caters to your schedule, health, and financial situation. They understand and appreciate the acknowledgment you are able to give.
Something about this aesthetic gives me a warm feeling 🤎🧡
