Formal Petition To Repeal Additional Rules
@adminjolene @deanbentley
To the board and temporary administrators of Devereux Academy,
The drastic changes made recently to the school without input from current teachers and students should be repealed posthaste. The teaching staff were not included in any way and were not consulted on how changes might affect the teaching environment. Additionally, the student body was not informed in a timely manner to allow for a smooth transition to any new rules, and has caused great distress among many students who were not expecting such drastic changes. Such wide sweeping changes cannot be made in such a short time period and are extraordinarily detrimental to the learning environment as well as the well being of the student body. These changes include but are not limited to:
Draconian punishments for minor infractions that punish those that are not even involved
New privileges to “legacies” that discriminate against students
New title requirements that go against what two parties have agreed upon
Time limits on orders that may hinder exploration and education of certain subjects
Additional burdens on students trying to work
Oppressive measures that unnecessarily invade privacy to enforce new curfews
New uniforms that segregate students and only serves to alienate students more
It is the belief of the teaching staff signed below that the temporary administrators have overstepped and are severely restricting the teaching staff and students in ways that are an extreme hindrance to the mission of this academy. These new rules must be lifted immediately and any changes the temporary administrators wish to implement needs to go through a process that includes input from the teaching staff and proper communication with the student body. A unilateral decision like this cannot stand and should not be considered valid.
We, the undersigned, being the teaching staff of Devereux Academy, call upon our temporary administrators to reverse the new changes to prevent destroying the long-term progress this school has made and should continue to strive for.
We stand with the students in need of proper education in this institution and put their needs and safety as our top priority.
