I think that starting before school starts is a little much. There’s enough time in August to get ready, and other than the couple of new recruits, most of the boys are returning players and know what’s what. I think sleep is definitely important and I would rather have my players rested than over-work them. It’s just a game, at the end of the day. 

I highly doubt that. 

I always enjoyed it myself personally.  A little time for just the fun of the game and catching up with the team before school started.  Ah, well I was a little concerned for you Coach, with your ‘sleep when I’m dead’ comment.  Sounds like it was more hyperbole than not then.

Well, there is work, which is usually 8-10 hour shifts depending on how busy it is and how much I can get accomplished.  I have several journals and podcasts that I keep up regarding pediatric medicine and best practices after work, or on my days off. I also have a couple of podcasts that are just for fun too. But I also have some familial obligations weekly, my volunteer work, and a dance class once a week if I’m not on evenings. My job often brings me all the excitement I can take.

I doubt anyone can forget April after meeting her - she definitely leaves an impression.

It was definitely good! Fun, too. But that’s definitely due in part to the company I had. Stevie is incredibly fun to be around.

I’ll let you know, maybe early next month once all the kids and their back to school hair cuts and whatnot are complete.  I’m working days so after about 4 I’m free, but I have early morning starts so, not too late.

MORGAN: yeah the stews really had to pick up the slack because she spent most of the first charter in the toilet throwing up :/ Captain ended up sending her to the docs and they prescribed her some kind of sea sickness pill lmao

MORGAN: I totally agree

MORGAN: Yeah, I don't think I could deal with that like at all.

MORGAN: no probably not

MORGAN: thanks! and thanks for coming, man! It was a blast to have so many familiar faces all back together again. The booze didn't hurt too. :P

MIKE: It's been my experience that while they curb symptoms, they rarely eradicate them. Poor thing.

MIKE: There is a reason I think you're a good guy Morgan McCarthy.

MORGAN: we had a third stew once who got really bad sea sickness. She said she'd worked on yachts before in her interview but it turned out that said yacht she had worked on had never actually left the dock, and then she quickly discovered yachting wasn't for her 😬

MORGAN: Yeah, family is important, y'know. Through the good and the bad, you gotta stick by each other

MORGAN: Why could I never see myself doing it? Honestly, I think it's too hard. I wouldn't like the pressure and I think facing the realities a doctor has to on a daily basis would kinda mess with me in the worst ways

MORGAN: I think it might be, y'know haha. I just wish he'd realise we're all adults now. Then again, maybe I'm not the best example of an 'adult'

MORGAN: great actually! There's some really talented kids on the team and I'm working at trying to attract new members at the moment for the upcoming try-outs. It is proper weird being back in McKinley again though

MIKE: Oh yikes! Poor thing. Sucks to be her. Although I bet it sucked for the rest of you too.

MIKE: Life isn't just... this is the shitty hand I was dealt. It's how you deal with it. And people can help with that load. Both blood and found family.

MIKE: Not going to lie, some days are brutal. Especially in pediatrics. They're so young, innocent, vulnerable and sometimes we just can't protect them.

MIKE: That might be true, but then again, is he?

MIKE: That's great! I can only imagine.

I look at the Cheerios now and wonder if Mads and I were the same way when we were in school, but I guess so because that’s why we were wanted for the squad. Now I know we were completely dedicated, but these lot are at a whole new level. They’re willing to do anything. That is freakin’ amazing. Championship here they come! Totes exciting. I think in a way yes?  I feel like things maybe balance out kind of equal though.  You and Madison had Sue and she was kind of on another level herself.  So this squad has you, who I suspect is perhaps more chill than Sue, which is totally not a bad thing.  So then perhaps to you that makes the squad seem more dedicated.  Does that make sense?

So, now that it’s August, I need to start planning my Halloween costume. Last year I was Red from Fraggle Rock so I can’t do another Muppet two years in a row…Maybe Ruby Gloom? Or Euchariah from Halloween is Grinch Night! Ugh, so many options!

Don’t remind me!  I’ve been volentold by the chief of staff to organize something for the pediatrics wing for Halloween.  I better get on it!  Ruby Gloom has my vote though.

So I spent the last 8 months getting permits and taking classes, interviewing and just making sure that everything is ready for this grand opening. So everyone come on out Friday for the Grand Opening of Mercy’s Salon and Spa. 

Now that I got that out of the way, how are you guys doing? 

Congratulations Mercedes!  That sounds amazing.  I’ll be in for haircut sooner than later I am sure.  But we should catch up soon.  If we can figure out our schedules.

Thanks, Mike. I’m pretty glad to be back, honestly. A bit stressful to come back on Sunday night and jump right back into coaching on Monday, but, y’know, I can sleep when I’m dead. 

How have you been?

I am sure that is.  Back in my day Coach had us starting before school officially started even.  But generally I don’t recommend that actual practice.  Sleep is an integral part of overall health.  And in sport situations, a lack of can lead to injuries, and longer healing time.  

Me?  Same old, same old.  I’m probably the most boring guy in Lima, truth be told.

MORGAN: very cute. I'd just laugh if my kid said that

MORGAN: can't really afford to just jet off, usually have to jet off to work on a mega yacht for a few months, then I can afford to actually travel. But that sounds really cute. Family means a lot to me, even if my parents were a bit absent when I was a kid.

MORGAN: so maybe, if I went and worked on mega yachts for a good while I could save for a kid!

MORGAN: yeah, I have high respect for you as a doc, doc. I know I could never do something like that, even if I was clever enough hahahaha

MORGAN: Not an awful lot. Milo is doing his very best to act like he doesn't give a shit about any of us. But I'm glad to be back to get to spend time with my siblings again, and to see all my friends I haven't seen in ages.

MORGAN: I'm sort of excited to start the job at McKinley too.

MIKE: I think I would too.

MIKE: Working on a mega yacht sounds kind of cool though. If you don't get sea sick!

MIKE: I appreciate people who appreciate family. Both born and found. It's very disheartening to see that shift right now.

MIKE: Maybe!

MIKE: Why is that? It's very rewarding, especially this specialty.

MIKE: I think that's his job or role as the youngest. Or at least, that's something I often see. Sounds like a very good reason to be back in Lima. Even if other people don't understand.

Tina Cohen-Chang!  It’s been too long.  I’m alright, like always.  Oh, but of course.  I live for my little patients.  My nurse was giving a little girl her MMR immunization the other day and the girl started screaming, before the needle got near her, “no, no, no!”  The mother then admonished the little girl, and said, “Clara, that’s not very polite.”  Without missing a beat the little girl then began to scream “no thank you, no thank you, no thank you!”

Thanks, Dr Mike. I don’t think McKinley could ever be truly ready for my return but here I go. And I just looked at the gossip blog and there’s already a post about me, so I won’t lie, I’m kind of excited to be back for a while. 

A fair share of alum have returned in various ways over the years.  So you are in good company.  You like that?  That’s good for you then.  Cause it seems like the people who are mentioned, it’s not usually a one time deal.

Well… I survived a week at the Police Academy. I was top of my class in physical, top 3 in academic, and top 2 in marksman, however, a majority of those in my class, and my instructors, were the last kind of people you’d hope to be police, yet the exact ones you would expect. 

I was basically assumed to be ‘one of them’ and they’d make the most intolerant, ignorant, racist, sexist, or homophobic jokes possible. I’d never laugh. I learned that it’s ‘shoot to kill’ in just about any semi-violent situation, which I think is bullshit. It’s not at all what I expected. I don’t want to be part of an institution that pushes all this shit instead of actually making things better. Maybe it’s because of the dinosaurs still teaching at the academy, or maybe it’s simply because we’re in Ohio. 

I’m back. Luckily, they had yet to find my replacement as the football coach at McKinley, so, Coach Clarington is back as well. I’m not going back to the RROTC though. 

Did I miss anything exciting while I was gone?

Sorry to hear that didn’t work out for you Hunter.  I’m sure McKinley is grateful to have you back.

MORGAN: You know it, Doc

MORGAN: Yeah, it's probably not a good idea right now lmao, I couldn't jet off when I wanted if I had a kid

MORGAN: :( sorry to hear that, man. I still think you're kicking ass.

MIKE: I thought it was cute. It made me smile, and laugh. The poor dad was so embarrassed when I shared the story. But that's the beauty and innocence of kids.

MIKE: Well, if you can afford to just jet off, you can probably afford decent care for a child too. I know sometimes parents feel like they have to do it all and by themselves, but that's not the way it was. The expression 'it takes a village'... I'd love to see families both found and not, to come together like that again. My extended was always around a lot when they could be. And why my parents scrimped to go back to China each summer if only for a little bit.

MIKE: It is what it is. I watch some of my patients deal with so much worse and it reminds me that I got off okay.
