i should finally be around here this week! ๐ got a busy week ahead of me buuuut i am technically off of work bc of it so in theory, i should have some spare time to get caught up on everything!!
xavier learning to deal with his emotions quietly, suffering with his grief in silence because he learned that his feelings were not something to be felt but something to be managed. vincent โseeing his mental health as a pr problem he needs to manage,โ so xavier learning very early on that he couldnโt talk to his father about it despite him being the only person he has to talk to in the first place. vincent who would rather shove his son into therapy without checking in on if itโs actually helping, vincent who would rather get his son medicated to silence his emotions than to have to feel them with him.
today i am thinking about xavier. xavier whose psychic abilities probably started manifesting when he was far too young, so all his nightmares were way too vivid. xavier whose dad was hardly around even then, so he had to figure out his abilities on his own for the most part. naturally, drawing and painting seemed to be the most obvious outlet, getting them out of his mind and onto a canvas of some sort. xavier who discovered he could bring his art to life, even in a small way, who spent months after his motherโs funeral painting scenes of sunday breakfast just to hear her laugh again, or the images of her tucking him into bed at night just to hear her sing that lullaby one last time. his fatherโs distance only growing after then, shows around the country popping up more often โ leaving xavier to have family dinners with a nanny and animated paintings from a better time.

he's quiet for a long moment, chest rising and falling in the scant space between them as he simply breathes the moment in --- breathes in augustine, the faint cologne that still clings to their shirt, the lingering winter chill that's seeped into their very bones. his arm tightens around his shoulders, his free one banding around their middle, hands splaying wide across his back as if he means to transfer his own warmth to them through the simple touch alone. โ i'm not worth missing the holidays with your dad, auggie, โ and he means it, even if it isn't a sentiment his roommate shares.
lips ghost over the skin just beneath his ear -โ- a tender brush, so soft he isn't even sure it can be considered a real kiss, before he draws back just enough to meet auggie's gaze. โ well, why do you think so few people see it, hm? โ xavier doesn't even bother with trying to hide the grin that splits across his face now, all familiar playful charm. warm palms slide up and down his arms in another attempt to coax the warmth back into him, thumb pausing to brush against the pulse point at their wrist before they ascend once more. โ kinda ruins the whole mysterious artist thing, doesn't it? โ
his smile morphs into something softer, the way he always does when he's with murph --- walls that he's built over years that never hesitate to crumble in their presence. right hand rises to tug at one of their stubbornly stray curls, attempting to right it and huffing out a laugh when it falls right back into its previous place. โ not that i'd mind all that much, if it was for you. โ

there's no reason these two should get along, but there's also no reason for them to squabble like children. "okay," he nods, forcing a smile in xavier's direction. while there might be a plethora of terrible things he could say, tyler decides to settle on the least offensive thing he can think of. "i guess i won't tell you that your hair looks unwashed and you have food in your teeth." of course, he doesn't, but xavier doesn't need to know that.
his jaw clenches hard enough that muscles begin to ache. the mere sound of tyler's voice grates on his nerves, and xavier is only successful in biting his tongue for mere seconds. โ i do not! โ is huffed out, the air escaping his lungs like it's been punched out. the same old familiar anger claws its way up his throat whenever tyler galpin so much as breathes near him. โ to either of those things. โ
fingers fidget, itching for something to keep them preoccupied. instead, he settles for simply shoving his hands into the pockets of his black jeans. โ i could tell you about how your jacket smells like a wet dog left out for too long in the rain --- โ a beat as he visibly struggles not to crack a smug grin. โ --- but i didn't. โ is it the โ gotcha โ moment he's dreamt about? not quite, but it'll have to do. โ seriously, dude. you wear that thing, like, every day. it reeks. โ

being dumped in switzerland after a particularly heated three weeks of back and forth with his father has felt like being dumped on the other side of the world. it was a miracle he was able to make it back to the states --- unbeknownst to his father, but what he doesn't know won't hurt him. augustine and lincoln were more than enough help in the process.
a laugh bubbles up from the back of his throat, โ yeah, well --- let's just say reichenbach doesn't have anything on nevermore. โ it hasn't been all that bad, if he's being totally honest. he did always keep to himself, after all, but news apparently spreads fast even in another country. vincent thorpe couldn't buy his son out of trouble fast enough, clearly, because the rumors of his falsely accused crimes have already reached the walls of his new school. forced to feel like an outcast in a school full of them.
โ i'm sorry i missed your birthday, by the way. tried to fly out to san francisco but the old man had me on strict house arrest. i, uh โ ended up shipping it here. to auggie. don't know if it arrived before i did. โ he'd paid for overnight shipping on it, a painting he'd brought to life on a canvas nearly the size of her, but the shipping company clearly hadn't considered it a priority. a sheepish smile, and then he's scrambling to dig into his pockets, huffing out a victorious โ hah! โ when he finally pulls a golden chain free from his back pocket.
โ got this for you too, in the meantime. โ xavier holds it up, dangling the chain from the tips of his thumb and forefinger, revealing an intricate crescent moon with a spherical ruby dangling in the center. โ no silver, promise, โ he teases with a grin before holding the necklace out, free for the taking. โ i know it isn't your . . usual style --- โ as in pastel colors and charm bracelets, โ --- but i figured if the whole blood moon wolf thing is gonna stick, you might like this. โ

shoulders fall and rise in a careless shrug, ever the picture of nonchalance. his head tips to the side as if studying her, as if he might be able to get a glimpse into her head if he stares hard enough. he couldn't if he tried. โ all i'm saying is, it might help to have someone around to help you . . figure it out. your visions. โ
his lips part, as though he might be on the verge of saying something else -โ-โ seems to think better of it at the very last moment, mouth sealing shut once more. his voice is carefully measured when he goes to speak again. โ no matter what you might think, iโm just trying to help. โ

rubbing one of his temples, tyler nods in response. "yeah," he says, licking his lips and trying to keep his calm. no matter what he says or does, it's always met with bitterness from xavier. "yeah, no. you're right." still nodding, refraining from saying what he actually wants to say, which is for xavier to go fuck himself. it's sure unfortunate for both of them that his outreach project happened to be at weathervane. "the customer's order is definitely none of the barista's business."
xavier, genuinely, could not have been assigned anywhere worse. his attempts to persuade ajax into trading him were unsuccessful, so now he's stuck here ---- wearing a stupid uniform with an apron that's cutting into him. and he's stuck with tyler galpin. he would take brushing the stuffed roadkill at uriah's heap over this any day.
โ yeah, well, i'm also the barista today, โ he shrugs. the espresso machine gives a steamed hiss as he jabs at it, probably doing something wrong but he'd rather die before admitting to that. it can't be that hard to run this place. โ i'm supposed to be working here today, y'know. doing more than wiping down the tables. i won't learn anything if you insist on hovering over my shoulder. โ
