tearing the internet apart for a good essay about how phantom thread is a beautiful and fucked up and often hilarious love story but also a cut-to-the-marrow parable about how the overmastering ego requires its own dissolution! the more determined one is to impose one's will on the world the more one cannot do good work in that state; the more active one is the more sincerely one craves reduction to a state of passive receptivity!!! i would like this good essay to point out what a big deal everyone made about daniel day lewis (rightly) but also to focus real hard on how it is vicky krieps who anchors him and the whole movie, because 75% of this movie is about alma, e.g that it posits as most necessary for happy genius NOT the carefully maintained egoic structure to which the world pays most attention, but the interiority and mystery and sincerity and petty humanness of inspiration or if you prefer "the soul," and while i know that unfortunately the word "soul" is impossible to use without turning yourself into a pumpkin, it's not MY fault pta gave his heroine that name
